Last-minute shoppers - apple trees

Bowsnbucks

5 year old buck +
I just checked in to Cummins site to see what they have left in DR trees. They list 124 Goldrush on B-118, and 76 on MM-111. Also 34 Enterprise on B-118, and 64 on MM-111, and 121 Sundance on MM-111. Great trees to have !! I have no ties to Cummins - just getting the word out in case anyone needs more trees. Still not too late.

Tempting but I'll stick with the 20 we already have coming for this year.

It makes me wonder what happens to any trees that are left unsold. Are they already dug up and in the cooler? Will they last another year in dormancy? Are they still planted and just grow to be even larger trees to be sold next year?

The trees are in their cooler warehouse. I remember they used old pallet sized rootstock crates with the roots in moist whatever...sawdust? Not sure what happens to unsold stock.

Awesome picture, thanks for sharing.

I looked to see if I snapped a photo last year but none on my phone. It was later in the season and fewer trees remained.

They usually have a sale in May. If I remember right they will liquidate for like $5 a tree but it is random what trees you get.

View attachment 8612 Here's a pic of the warehouse last weekend.
Did you pick up your trees and plant them or were you just cruising through? Mine are shipping week of the 10th but if they're ready I could go pick them up and get them in the ground earlier.

I haven't arranged a pickup date yet but I was thinking of getting mine Friday afternoon. They are pretty flexible on timing for shipping or pickup. The trees are stored as you see in the photo. They'll pick the order and get them bundled together when it is time to ship out pickup.

So call if you want to pick up and arrange the time. They would have it bundled up to go for you.

I'm not really sure if I can get 26 of them in my pickup.

Yeah, my bundle last year was over 8ft long. Luckily I have a long bed and cover. Sometimes it is better to just have something shipped.

26 is no problem. I got fifty last year and it did t take up 25 % of my bed. They bundle them tight even for pickup

That's only for the trees that they don't know what the variety is. I dont think they would ever discount a tree at Cummins that was a known variety. Bad business because many might wait until end even though they might not get what they want.

Checked my emails from them from last year. On May 8, an email advertised remaining stock for $5 a tree, min 10 trees. Random mix of what you got but they were labeled for rootstock and variety. Wouldn't be worth it for me to end up with some Fujis on Bud 9.

They also had sales of unknown, unlabeled trees for $5 each too. Not sure why anyone would want those either.

I knew a guy in the flower business. At the end of the year he disposed of the leftovers, otherwise it hurt sales as everyone would wait until the end to try and get a deal. I remember being there as he was throwing them out and people offering quarter price as he was throwing them out anyway. He just smiled and tossed them.

Unfortunately there are some unscrupulous wholesale "nurseries" who buy year end trees and then label them as whatever they want and sell them to the big box store chains. As my circle widens I have learned that to be fact and not just internet rumors. Actually got a call from a another "nursery" I had never heard of this year interested in making me an offer on any "left over" trees this spring that I had, didnt matter on variety or root stock. I declined the offer.

Not on topic but I know. One of you on here will know... Where does rootstock that is sold for grafting come from? Is is started from seed? Is it started some other way?

Clonal rootstocks are from stool beds or cuttings. Some rootstocks are grown from seed. Here are some large rootstock producers and wholesalers.
