KS guys I hope we get through this year without destroying the KDWP and our deer herds

Had a Game Warden tell me (35 yrs ago and family friend) to buy land, that KS would eventually open up the borders to NR's and that locals that didn't own wouldn't be able to compete with the rest of the country. Said that after that regulations would change that would not protect the mature age classes of buck. Damn if he didn't nail it!
I’m going on a tangent, naturally, but this links to another issue. Some people…argue that land access is killing the sport. People don’t have anywhere to hunt and a lot of that is because those that can, are hoarding up land. Well because of states f’ing up age structure by regulations it’s about the only way people can hunt mature bucks. So when I see one guy hunting 1000 acres, I say good for you!

Total derailment now, but it's just another version of people crying "class warfare".

Besides, if you believe SD's views about states buying up private land to make it public, it's only a matter of time...

I really like Matt Rinella‘s message on hunting quietly, but he lost me when he started raging on guys like the Drury brothers for owning more land than the “need”. That’s socialism. But I’ll give him a small pass as a western big game guy, I don’t think they understand all the forces at work against a buck making it to maturity.

Participation trophy hunting. Started with bait, then to crossbows and now whatever else they can erode.

Does Kansas have a skip sligh type guy? He’s been great for Iowa. Wish he lived in Kentucky
You'll get skip if you can pry him from our cold dead hands! Having someone that is that knowledgeable and willing to go to the capital and fight for us is priceless.

One of the things that drives me mad on some of the podcasts I listen to is they can't figure out how there are less hunters than ever and less access also. Hunting mature bucks in 5 different states each year because your state f'ed up the regs at home is a bit much. I know that is definitely not the case for every hunter, but local guys pay the price when it happens. Essentially that would be our state f'ing up our regs by giving access to someone else because their state f'ed up their regs. Kinda sucks... Kansas would LOVE to do that for us...

If I could afford it, I'd hunt mature bucks in EVERY state. It would have nothing to do with my state's regs or your state's regs.

Uhhh. My state’s regs would have to allow it. No?

For sure, but that's not what we are talking about, is it? I must be confused.

I’m just following the direction of the thread, but 2 corrupt politicians trying to bankrupt the G&F to benefit their business which caters to non-residents to the detriment of their resident hunter population. I’d say they are related. The lack of access is tied to the issue as well.

Well if they would just put a high fence around their place and raise their own deer to shoot that would solve the problem of them making it easy for the non-residents and kids alike to see plenty of deer and shooting whatever the wish over a pile of corn. Oh wait it's just easier to "steal" a public resource that costs them nothing and profit from it.

Not to mention I’m sure they are hunting a bunch of leased farms thereby relying and impacting whole bunch of neighborhoods.

I hate all outfitters. Just fyi.

Me too, mostly. Let’s be honest though, if they actually had a limit on the number of non-res hunters allowed, outfitters wouldn’t be too much of a problem. But once Kansas opened the door, they blew all of their promises right out the door. I think it was originally supposed to be capped at like 5%? Then 8, then 11, I think it’s like 15% now and rising. I would be happy for a guy from somewhere else to experience what we have once in a while. But every year? And 3 of my buddies had to give up hunting to make it happen? No way…

I agree about the politicians, and it's a pathetically desperate attempt to hold the G&F hostage over their personal desires.

As far as the access goes, it isn't a unique thing to your state and has very little to do with the guy who hunts mature bucks in multiple states.

Land prices are increasing as it becomes less available (mostly due to large money investors seeing land as a safe place to park money during a time of uncertainty). This has driven farmers and others invested in land to squeeze the most out of their property. If that means a permission farm becomes a leased farm, that sucks but it is happening everywhere. If people stop hunting because they lost their honey hole private ground permission piece, they just didn't love to hunt that much.

Here's a quote from another forum that's been discussing this. Corbet has been reported for conflict of interest and Rep Carlin is pursuing it.
Her email is below if interested;

"Rep Carlin has drafted a conflict of interest bill and introduced it in the elections committee. She is requesting support if people can show up to be there for the hearing and also is wanting anyone who agrees to testify on the bill in person or in writing. I've asked her for the bill number and will share it here. Sounds like this is a great chance to prevent these guys from drafting bills every year in attempts to help nonresidents and themselves and hurt the KDWP."

Cat,
If you get the bill number, I'd like to have when I email Rep Carlin. I could not find it on the House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources website. Thanks

All of the reps names and emails are on the Kansas Bowsite.com ready to be copied and pasted

“Representative Sydney Carlin requested the introduction of 24RS2320 which would add conflict of interest to Legislatures in regards to prohibiting members of Legislature from voting on matters in which they have a special interest.”
