Is it Baltimore or Fergeson?

Not applicable to me. I would never pursue something that is unreachable. Thats called setting yourself up for failure. I am all for striving for excellence. Am I missing something here?

I don't think that you're "missing" anything, as it's something that is personal. For example, I would say that, for me, attempting something that I think I can't do tests my abilities and pushes me to be better than I thought I was, OR reinforces that I need to do more work. I would say that only attempting things that I know I will win drastically limits my potential. I would say that if I were to not attempt something because I thought I would fail, then I would be letting fear of failure control my life. Now, this isn't to say that I am going to go and bet my entire life savings on me becoming an NFL lineman. This is just how I interpreted it. I don't want to say that I'm correct in my thinking, and equally importantly that you are wrong in yours, because there is no singular correct way to think about this stuff. Everyone approaches things differently, and that's the beauty of life!

Well stated. I can see your interpretation

Just another example of a bleeding heart liberal Professor teaching at one of the most liberal universities in the country and playing the race card to drive her uber-liberal agenda. Read the comments below the story, just about every one thinks the author is a joke. Leave it to that rag the Washington Post to even publish an article like that.

what burns my arse about this situation....is the framing of this particular "uprising" in terms of race.

Here are some of the FACTS about Baltimore.
The city is 63% Black.
City Council President is black, along with 9 of 15 council seats.
The Mayor is black.
The Police Commissioner is black.
US Congressman for the district that covers half the city is black
5 of 6 State Senators representing districts in Baltimore are black
11 of 21 State General Assembly seats for districts in Baltimore are black.

And the further down you go in the chain of command in the city government there are also black people involved...elected, appointed, or otherwise.

The black population in Baltimore is not under represented in the political structure at all. A non-black race is not disproportionately in power and oppressing them. If anything it seems as though they have the ability to be in control.

Furthermore, the "Black Lives Matter" movement doesnt seem to "rally" every time a black person takes the life of another black person....which happens WAAYYYY more often than the scenario of a white cop killing a black citizen. So it seems that there is a double standard there.

Perception becomes reality when politicians and opportunist manipulate an ignorant and willing populist.

My issue with all of this is the lack of discussion about the facts Phil lists and those who excuse the rioting and go so far as to assign blame for the black behavior on a white society as though blacks have no responsibility for it.

When they interview the inner city blacks there is no recognition by them that their situation is tied to their behavior and instead is due to the white society oppressing them. This class warfare used by the democrats has created a culture where those who don’t succeed economically can blame someone else instead of personal responsibility.

Inequities in economic status have been in society and across all races forever, they did not just turn up because blacks are oppressed.

In one area of Baltimore, Asian businesses were targetted for vandalism and black owned business was bypassed....

I see John and Tom mentioned "thugs".

Yesterday,.a radio program said Thug has two meanings, much like the N word has different meanings when used by two different races.

Thug must mean someone who resists the establishment and deserves some respect in the black community.

That is not at all what I thought a Thug was.

Thug= The guy standing on the corner with his a$$ hanging out of his pants that you don't want dating your daughter. Other indicators: hat cocked to the side, lack of job and/or employment history, runs or resists the sight of police. Color doesn't matter, thugs come in all sorts of colors, sizes, ages, etc...
