Habitat out loud

When's the best time to plant winter trit? We never tried it before. Looks like deer hammer it from your pics. No tillage required - just throw & roll?

I'd go same time you plant rye for your neck of the woods. I put some on the ground 50 days before frost, I also did some 27 days before first frost. Genetically, it's half rye, so I think that earns you a lot of forgiveness.

Everything was throw and roll this year except for that yard plot. The jap millet was throw and roll and it went down really well. A little standup is ok as long as the trit gets thru and gets sun.

This is the original yard plot that has been here for 6 years now. I don’t remember when I rolled it, but it’s getting there. Three more weeks for this to accumulate should have it looking really nice.

I see Welter's sells spring trit along with 3 varieties of winter trit. Any experience with that?

Gonna have to try winter trit next year as our plots are planted now. What would be good to plant with winter trit - if planted around Labor Day ?

This is a good one:

Treat it just like you would rye: clovers, chicory, brassicas etc.

How's the rabbit, hare and grouse population looking near your brush pile project? That looks like an awesome spot to bag a few tasty critters later in the fall.

The rabbits are the best I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen two grouse in 2025. I don’t know what the hell is going on with them.

I had piles of rabbit droppings in my brush piles last winter.

Grouse are cyclical in their populations by nature, but several diseases are hammering grouse now. West Nile virus is one spread by mosquitoes, and it's killing grouse here in Pa.

When clearing an uncle's property some years ago, we built brush piles all over his hillsides. They became rabbit hotels, and the hunting with his beagles was tremendous. Brush piles even attract grouse here. Grouse will back right into / under them in bad weather if built with "overhangs" of limbs & evergreens.

I think they had a tough spring. It was cold and wet all the way to June 1st.

Looks great to me. Even if it looks a little thin now, all that stuff will flex and fill the gap. I’ve seen rye throw up as little as three stalks per plant, and I’ve personally grown one that threw off 22 in my garden. It will fill in, so will the rest.

If you can make the rest of the fall without burning off from heat and drought, there’s no stopping it next season. You’re gonna have a great throw and roll stand for next year.

SD, how's your giant squash experiment coming along?

SD, how's your giant squash experiment coming along?

It went well enough. I had expected more fruits off what I had. There were upwards of a dozen flowers, but only ended up getting 3 pink banana jumbo squash.

The woodchuck got one, I got the other two.

I brought them home and tried baking one. I really liked how they turned out. Maple syrup, cinnamon, and butter.

The Aldi dry beans under rolled millet were a smashing success. I wish I’d trust my gut on these things and had put down 50 pounds instead of a test patch of 4.

Mixed beans or a single type? I don't remember that post.

I think those were all navy beans. I'm almost certain. I'd have to go back to the video to be sure.

Do you remember what you paid per pound? I think I have an Aldi near me.

I think you can get any of them for $1/lb. It's a hell of a deal for cleaned edible bean seed. I think next year I'd just start buying up what they had and bring them home and empty the bags into a bucket. I can't even drive to a seed dealer for $50.
