Habitat out loud

When's the best time to plant winter trit? We never tried it before. Looks like deer hammer it from your pics. No tillage required - just throw & roll?

I'd go same time you plant rye for your neck of the woods. I put some on the ground 50 days before frost, I also did some 27 days before first frost. Genetically, it's half rye, so I think that earns you a lot of forgiveness.

Everything was throw and roll this year except for that yard plot. The jap millet was throw and roll and it went down really well. A little standup is ok as long as the trit gets thru and gets sun.

This is the original yard plot that has been here for 6 years now. I don’t remember when I rolled it, but it’s getting there. Three more weeks for this to accumulate should have it looking really nice.

I see Welter's sells spring trit along with 3 varieties of winter trit. Any experience with that?

Gonna have to try winter trit next year as our plots are planted now. What would be good to plant with winter trit - if planted around Labor Day ?

This is a good one:

Treat it just like you would rye: clovers, chicory, brassicas etc.

How's the rabbit, hare and grouse population looking near your brush pile project? That looks like an awesome spot to bag a few tasty critters later in the fall.

The rabbits are the best I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen two grouse in 2025. I don’t know what the hell is going on with them.

I had piles of rabbit droppings in my brush piles last winter.
