Habitat out loud

I'm going to post a pic here of my mulch laid down by my roller crimper. I have very sandy soil...so much so that water hardly can puddle as it drains away so fast.

Most often....the mulch is absolutely the best armor on my soil I could ask for. I can flail mow and get fine mulch which will deteriorate fairly soon....or roller crimp to get lasting, all-season long mulch. My drill easily cuts through the mulch to deposit seed into the dirt.....yet you can hardly find the slots after drilling the seeds.

In the pic.....I had killed the rye and clover with applications of 24d, Glyphosate, and then a later application of the Gly.....at which time I applied Simazine as a pre-emergent. I thought my efforts were wasted until yesterday when I got to my land after two weeks of being away. Now I got
nice rows of switch with good amor on the soil.

Two weeks ago I thought my switch efforts were to no avail......so in some areas I drilled brassica into the mulch (and the switch).......so it's going to be interesting what happens this year. I am still uncertain what I can do for weed control in those areas.....but I think I am just gonna let it ride this year. I got way to much on my plate as it is. I think it will be good.

Anyway.....here is what good armor looks like.

We’re gonna find out. Hard part is, so many variables shift at the same time. This season is looking different from the last in a bunch of different ways at my place that can and will likely skew this:

+ way more rain this year
+ way more deer this year

Those things could put pressure on it and make utilization better.

- way more browse this year
- way more soft and hard mast this year
- way more plot acreage this year

Those things could skew it the other way. I’m hoping because there are wheat traits in trit that it will get used more. I’ve had more years than not where I had nice stands of rye go unused almost the whole way to winter. But those were low population years and I also had big jumps in plot acreage while also being very aggressive on the saw right after season. Those years, the few deer there were, were more interested in eating ash tops than green rye.

I’m guessing It’ll be nearly unnoticeable in most categories, the differences between rye and trit. It will be later to bolt and head out coming out of spring. Will that affect its weed prevention powers? I’m not sure.

Is trit as easy to seed as rye? Or does it need to be buried some depth into the soil? Thatch cover, as in throw & mow??

I would treat it the same as rye far as depth is concerned. I’ll look this week to see how well it’s coming in the duff layer.

I was in St Cloud today, to line up a California Closet for our new home......and to pick out furniture for the new home too. Downsizing....way past due....but we finally found a place that is right for us. Only 8 miles to Deertopia from the new place.....and lots of benefits for us. Pretty exciting to be going to the next chapter in the journey called life.

Anyway....when I was in St Cloud I made the final stop of the day at Mimbach's Fleet and Farm Supply. A really good store with most of the right stuff for guys like me. I asked if they had Triticale....and they were sold out. I did buy 8 bags of winter rye....and I got two or three in my "inventory". Also bought 3 bags of urea to feed my brassica which is looking fantastic. Not sure on the rate for broadcasting Urea on brassica. Advice appreciated???? I cannot remember.

Been running like a race horse at the Kentucky Derby.....to get stuff done on the new home and to get the lake home on the market.....and figure out a way to sell our large number of items we currently own. Thankfully I got pretty good experience in such things from my past experiences.

We got good plans in place..but it has been a circus at times. So much to do. Thankful for the realtor we have and for the contacts they have for folks that do this very thing....and do it well. In truth...we should have done this 3 years ago....but never found the place we wanted to buy...until about a month ago. It's gonna be fantastic....we just gotta make it thru the white-water times right now.

Congrats on the new place! I can’t help ya on the urea. I just don’t remember.

You have to come for a visit. I bought a townhome....and its sitting on a bluff overlooking 3 holes of a beautiful golf course and is in one of the most beautiful northern woods setting you can find. Not even a single step in the design. All one level "patio" home...which is what we need now. 3 ponds below...with a flowing stream between two of them.....and a fountain on the other one. I cannot think of a more beautiful setting for a "civilized" home in this entire area. We have an HOA with just 8 homes in it. I bought the first one....and got the best lot of the bunch (IMO). I will have an outdoor Christmas tree....just a few yards from my patio.....and so many home features and available resort features than one can list.

My boat will be moored in a very secure marina for homeowners just a short golf cart drive away....that is in a protected water course that flows into Pelican lake. Dedicated parking spot included. Pelican is a "destination" walleye lake with Florida like beaches and fantastic swimming (even scuba diving) and the resort owns the big island on the lake for picnics and such. Mr Walleye (Gary Roach) says it's his favorite lake. The resort has numerous resteraunts and bars.....and has 3 golf courses...one course is being re-engineed and lighted for nighttime use. Another was designed by Arnold Palmer. Swimming pool, beaches, and many other amenities are available for use by homeowners....like me. The lighted golf course is remote enough that it will not affect joining properties. Pretty cool. In the winter they have cross country skiing on this golf course.....and sleigh rides and such. The list goes on.

Almost pinching myself as you cannot buy a patio home for this price on 1/2 acre of land nearby. I do NOT want the land. The HOA takes care of ALL the snow, mowing, and even painting your home when that time comes about. Even provides pre-softened water via the well we own. No salt to deal with. Unreal...and the HOA fee is under $300 month. YOWSIR. Yeah...I cannot park a trailer in my yard.....but Deertopia is only 10 minutes away....and I can pee in my yard out there and park 50 trailers if I want to. Can work all morning and come home for lunch. Smile.

I think I am going to donate my elk mount to their premier restaurant and bar (called "Antlers") .....as I do not have a place for it anymore....and I can still stop by to visit my "experience" with this six by six elk. It will be the best antlered critter they have....aside a very nice moose that someone like me has donated to the place. It's not a huge trophy by many standards....but it is a good specimen none the less.

I shot this bull in New Mexico while on camera for the "Best of the West" tv show with John Burns back in the day.....2003. We were on the side of a pretty step mountain to get into position for this shot. It was easy to set up my PoleCat shooting tripod....but, I had to wait on the camera man to set up his gear before squeezing the trigger at 650 yards away. A short time after making my shot...the critter staggered just a bit....and then tumbled a long distance down the mountainside into the timber....across a large canyon on a different mountain. You could not get directly to my kill.....so the cameraman and I were able to direct my guide (from across the canyon) to get to my elk....which took an hour or more for him to get to it. We then celebrated across the canyon with huge hoops and hollers....before going over to help retrieve my kill. lol

Those were times I will never forget. The elk was not the most huge trophy by many standards....and I do not care even one little bit. But the shot off my tripod on terrain you could barely stand on....and my ability under those conditions is a moment I will cherish forever. I had a 7mm STW and had pretty good shooting skills and knowledge for those times....all garnered from shooting countless rounds at both prairie dogs and competitive bench-rest rifle shooting. I KNEW I could make that shot...if only the camera man could get set up in time. My goal was to sell my Polecat bipod/tripod products at that time. Outdoor TV shows were all the rage....and "free" marketing to Stoney Point....plus a hell of a lot of fun. And, THAT is how you can afford to live on a home built on Gull lake. Grin. I'm over it now. BTDT. Time to move on.

Good memories of people and events. Not sure why I have been so blessed? Thankful.

I had to swerve slightly tonight on my way to checkup on our new place. A HUGE black bear came running across four lanes of traffic on highway 371. The car behind me nearly had a collision... but was able to avoid such. It is a wild place. grin.

Congratulations on the new place. White birch is a nice course and the restaurant has always been good in my experience.

Congrats on finding your new place! 8 miles to Deertopia sounds like gold for being handy for a quick escape.

Gonna fall on the sword here.

88% calcium did not knock out the burdock.

Yep....can drive home for lunch and a nap. Life is good. Or do a short project in the morning....and play some golf in the afternoon. I always heard you should maintain a balanced lifestyle.

SD did you roll the burdock?

Yeah, that was the first half of that video. If you watch the opening, I hit some burdock right away on the second pass of the first plot. It goes flat.

The new plot from this summers demolition is sailing right along. Gonna let this go until the weekend after Labor Day, then throw in beans and trit and some flower seed, and lay it down with the packer.

I'm hoping all the stuff underneath pops up after I flatten the japanese millet.

Is that what most of the tall green stuff is?

Yeah, I put in another couple types of sorghum, but I can't see any of it out there. One is supposed to be a dwarf with lots of leaves on a short stalk, but I haven't seen a one.

The rest of the millet heads filled this week. This is the biggest crop of jap millet I’ve ever had.

The clovers and the rest underneath look great too. I’m getting anxious to roll this, but I have to wait until the weekend after Labor Day.
