I'm going to post a pic here of my mulch laid down by my roller crimper. I have very sandy soil...so much so that water hardly can puddle as it drains away so fast.
Most often....the mulch is absolutely the best armor on my soil I could ask for. I can flail mow and get fine mulch which will deteriorate fairly soon....or roller crimp to get lasting, all-season long mulch. My drill easily cuts through the mulch to deposit seed into the dirt.....yet you can hardly find the slots after drilling the seeds.
In the pic.....I had killed the rye and clover with applications of 24d, Glyphosate, and then a later application of the Gly.....at which time I applied Simazine as a pre-emergent. I thought my efforts were wasted until yesterday when I got to my land after two weeks of being away. Now I got
nice rows of switch with good amor on the soil.
Two weeks ago I thought my switch efforts were to no avail......so in some areas I drilled brassica into the mulch (and the switch).......so it's going to be interesting what happens this year. I am still uncertain what I can do for weed control in those areas.....but I think I am just gonna let it ride this year. I got way to much on my plate as it is. I think it will be good.
Anyway.....here is what good armor looks like.
