Habitat out loud

Opening weekend of tree planting was a success. I had hopes of planting the edge area by my lawn into solid dogwood. That got done. This whole area isn’t 30x50 feet. I put 400 ROD in this spot.

This is what they look like. I plant in big clusters so they get to bush status faster.

Really like that blue blind you have in the background.

The guy I got that from quit using it 20 years ago, and he was not the first owner of that unit.

I keep it tucked in the woods. People start seeing amenities like that and then they know you’ve got money.

Nothing like the sight of a healthy wood pile.

ROD looks good too.

Got up early today to beat the heat. Put the last load of wood on the camp pile. Got this pile cut up.

Decided to do some filmin and producin this weekend. I've had some rip and relocate white spruce die years after planting. So this is the second or third try to get trees to go in these spots. This time around, I'm amending with rotted sawdust to try to loosen up the dirt and encourage some earthworm activity around the tree.

This one is filling borrow pits I made when fixing trails with the excavator. Poplar is of little value around me, but it's still carbon and biomass, and it's highest value begins when it's knocked out of the sky. I chunked up some logs I had around and used them to fill my borrow pits. Maybe years from now I can dig these back up when they're broken down to mush and use it and repeat the process.

"Wall" is the right word. AV would make a great screen.

Got the new fence put up on the revamped hoog 3 garden.

Jumbo faba beans off to a good start. Trit to the right of them, a row of corn and beans mixed together on the left and left.

Too much hemp straw killed 90% of my garlic. I’m really bummed about that.

So I raked all that shit off and spread it under my nearby spruce trees.

I’ll stick with wood chips for garlic mulch. I had 100% emergence in wood chips last year.

That's some nice arrowood viburnum growth, have they been protected? I didn't protect the ones I planted last year well enough and they are dead or struggling.. Planted more this year and protected them and last years. I might have to buy 1 big potted one to put nearby and protect to figure out if the BR seedlings from cold stream farms are up to snuff!

They’ve never been protected. I used to butcher them every couple years to restart them. That stuff grows wild all over up by me.

I wish I had that kind of prevalence from any other soft mast except woodbine. I've been trying to get the rest of the soft mast going, and it's just a slow road.

The 2025 dig starts tomorrow at 8:30pm. I’m so excited I can’t sit down.

There won’t be a dig video. It was slow moving. Still, the demolition is done. Tomorrow I will smooth it out, put the topsoil back, lime and seed.

Here’s a few shots as I worked my way north.

You don't have ferns there, SD? I didn't see any in that 2nd pic of nice re-growth. Ferns smother re-growth here - unless we treat for them.
