Fun shooting

Most of us our deer season is over, or we got enough in the freezer already.

What are you guys doing for fun shooting? Gun distances targets. Maybe do other kinds of shooting instead like trap.

One fun thing I do is blackpowder competitions. Woodswalk ones. A few interesting shots is to shoot a lolipop out offhand, hit a hanging car coilspring, hit a sagging chain. All offhand shots anywhere from 15 yards to usually 80 yards. Sometimes there a large 100 or 150 yard shot, like hit a large welding tank.

I shoot alot of gong targets with my 22lr's. Most often iron sights or peep sights. My favorite is a golf ball sized chunk of metal at 50 yards offhand. I got several 6 inch gongs at 50,100, and 200 yards at camp in a swamp.

I feel hunting rifles are the tools of the trade. I usualy shoot more primitive guns for fun. With the new reloading setup feel tempted to get something like a 38 lever gun or a 223 or 22 hornet.

Also, this is the time of year I get more of a chance to shoot. Don't need to be quiet at camp, or have foodplot or other property projects. Some drink, food, fun with the snowmobile, and plenty of empty brass shells by the bench.

I will put a few pounds of .308 and 6mm down range for the next couple months, and probably get a new project going. I have a .243 take-off that I want to fit to an AR upper. Maybe try a 6ppc or 6mm fat rat, or see what reamers are on sale.

Been doing mag dumps with a full auto AR and breaking in my new SAR-9.

I sighted in the silenced AR we use for coyote hunting. Might take a whack at them tonight. Have them pretty consistent on the cameras.

Still hunting here in Mass...we've had perfect tracking conditions for the past week. Another week or so and then I'll move on to some winter projects and shooting.

I am modernizing my AR with a floating hand guard and some new furniture...might do an LPVO with an offset red dot and buck-up iron sights. I was running a red dot with a 3x magnifier. Have to get it all sighted in.

And just for pure fun I enjoy M1 Garands...restoring them, fixing them, and shooting them until they smoke! Just finishing up this one...a period correct 1943 M1 made by Springfield Armory that took me about a year to restore to 1943 specs.

Looks pretty nice natty. Bought a M! garand sling and cleaning kit for the oldest kid. He's got one with a 308 conversion. Got him 100 round of brass and some basic 150 heads. See what loads we can make of it.

I much more enjoy shooting irons over scopes. But, more and more of utning is done wit scopes. Hit em with your best shot. Of course in PA, its open sights. Snow cover helps alot with lighting though.

Oh yeah....I agree. When I am tracking in VT I carry a Remington 7600 pump with a peep sight. Where I hunt you'd never get a shot of more than 60 or 70 yards.

My brother and I shoot a lot of M1's together. We play the M1 Garand version of HORSE. I'll call the shot....prone...100 yard gong....and then take it. If I make it, he has to make it or he gets an H if he misses, and so on...just like in basketball. We're pretty closely matched with all the standard shots...prone, kneeling, sitting, standing...100, 200, 300 yards, etc. When I want to break him or go for the throat I'll call the 300 yard gong, but with the rear site set for 100 yards. Or I'll call the 100 yard gong, but you have to skip it in on target off the ground first. 😆 That one is mostly luck. But when it works, it's a guaranteed "E" to win the match.

remingon 7600 is the PA state gun...........

i got gongs in the swamp Got those 3 swing targets on a metal wire frame at 35. 6 inch gong at 50, 6 inch gong at 100. 6 inch gong at 200 and a big 10 inch gong at 230. My favorite gong is a 1 inch thick piece of metal about the size of an egg at 50 yards. I have 120v night lights that I can shoot the 50 and 100 yards targets just fine with. Nice doing some shooting after a long day of working up there. I probably should put a better shooting berm at home. I have a 25 yard bullet trap, which does the job for practice ok.

Want to shoot more nrl hunter style matches this year so will be practicing a bit on shooting applicable rifles and improving range and engage work flow.

You got an extra treestand or bring them in for the offseason, try putting it up and shooting various shots. Especially twisting to the right if your right handed.

I have one foodplot like 150 yards from the cabin. A little 1/10th acre spot. Treated it well this past year , good dose of lime and tillage. Spent 2 days in one foodplot n nothing. Deer use it at night more, and might be bustine me well before they get there. I picked up a free treestand off the side of the road, Then I noticed the legs weren't so hot, so I put it up at camp like 4ft tall high chair. Plopped it off to the side of the foodplot. Saw a deer I wanted to shoot and bang. Went 100 yards. Until after I shot it I noticed I shot it right handed, not my usual left hand. IT was way to the left of me and I practice that shot. Was only 40 yards or so, so no big deal. Oddly enough put that stand up, then sat on it like 20 minutes. Set it up for the right handed folks to enjoy. Southpaws gotta work for it.......

Took one of my boys and a couple of his buddies out to my 1000yd range last week and let them shoot some they had a good time. I had a couple full size IDPA targets at 500 yds and my camera system set up at 1000 yds. They managed to hit the 12x20 IDPA hanging between my two 4’ square targets at 1000yds twice. I had 2 AR’s they beat the 500yd targets up with pretty well with and I brought a couple 6.5 Creedmoors for them to use at 1000yds.
