fishing reports

There is always hindsight. It’s gonna be a lot of fun to manage that, no matter what happens. You can always put in traps and pour the walleye to those crappies if they get out of hand.

Ever thought about throwing some catfish in? Catfish might eat an extra year class of bigger crappie and sunfish after they get too big for the walleye.

If my ponds ever happen, there will be a perch/walleye pond, and a perch/catfish pond.

I like catching and eating catfish...but they can muddy the water up and my wife is almost ADD with how the pond looks. Also catfish are a super predator, eventually the pond would end up with huge cats and that would be about all.
The main fish in this pond will hopefully be yellow perch and smallies, the redear are to help keep things clean and they are very shy not very prolific so won't get out of control and they grow big so we can eat some. The crappie won't go back in no matter the size big ones I'll clean small I'll toss, at some point we will eat some of the smallies that are mid size, we will no doubt eat some of the walleye when they get big but they are mainly going to be the top predator and to keep all the others thinned...they also can live for twenty years. I can't wait to one day catch four pound small mouth for fun whenever we want.

Smallies are my favorite sportfish as well.

If you get squeamish at the sight of blood, go ahead and close this one.

Logan and I went to Lanier yesterday and had a great time with one exception. Started out fishing main lake and I caught the first one of the day on a jerk bait. Logan missed a few on a worm, but connected on the third stop of the day with five nice spots. We continued hitting different places and picked up a few here and there. Don't know what time it was for sure, but guessing around 12:30, I had a little incident.

Once we got that taken care of, we continued fishing until 5:30. Had a great day landing over 50 bass with most in the 2.5-4# range and our 5 best went 19.64#. The hand is not too bad, just a little tender this morning.

Did ya save the lure, or have to cut it up?

I say this with great confidence. A guy like you that rips a hook out of his hand and keeps on fishing has never watched the Barbie movie. Am I right?!

My son and I were fishing once out of a flat bottomed boat in my 1.5 acre pond. A couple times I told him to cast out of the side of the boat, not the back, because I had heard his lure whistle pretty close a couple times already. Sure enough, his small boy attention span failed and I felt that Rapala hit my ear ! I immediately grabbed it anticipating a jerk and told him to put his rod down. We made our way to the shop where I was able to cut the hook off with some dikes. Then, we went to the house where I was too much of a wuss to be able to hold still while my wife got it out. I didn’t know that much blood could come from an earlobe ! Went to the ER and got it out, one stitch I believe, and went on our way. All he could think about was the 3.5 pound bass he had caught and that it was bigger than daddy’s ! That was 20 years ago and the scar is still with me.

Just popped it out and kept on fishing once I got it to stop bleeding. If y'all have never used the string method to remove a hook, you need to learn how to do it. It wouldn't have been so bad had the fish quit flopping around while we were hooked together. Just thankful Logan was with me to help removing the hooks from the fish and from me.

I use to live on Lanier…and I know when it’s topwater and Jerkbait and spybait time…it was net time! That use to scare the crap out of me

I was joking about "saving" the lure instead of cutting the hook off.
Both of ya hooked at the same time? That's horrible!

I did as well and foolishly sold my place to get the kids in better schools, but that was 25 years ago. It has changed so much with the blue back introduction. You mentioned spy baits so it was a recent departure for you. I should have kept my place and just bought another place in a better school district and used it as a lake house. I just wasn't making the beans back then.

Yeah, my wife and I built in flat Creek about six years ago and sold 2 1/2 years ago. As far as a spotted bass fishery, I challenge anyone to find a better one in the country. You might pull the occasional bigger fish out of a lake in California but consistent 20+ pound bags Lanier wins

View attachment 63766The top water bite has been hot in south Florida! Wife had me beat this day. The third pic is a 5.6 and a 4.0 that I caught at the same time on a Whopper Plopper 130. Never done that before. Whopper Plopper is catching 5+ pounders every time out. Wife caught hers on a Gambler poppin frog.

First smallie ever a fat 9.5 incher! Caught with minnow and a bobber.

Followed immediately by another smallie…and I can’t even get them to take a Ned rig this spring.

Was fishing the other day, pulling the boat up on the trailer at the ramp, and heard this kid start squealing like a stuck pig. The boat next to me was unloading, and the guys kid was messing around with his pole and managed to get a hook stuck in his head, thru his hat, lol. The kid was 10, but you'd thought he ripped the scalp off his head the way he was squealing. I looked at it with his dad, and the barb was buried in the scalp. I asked him if he knew what to do. He said he did, but, he didn't sound very confident. So I hung around till he pulled his boat over to the bank. He had his phone out, watching a youtube on how to do the string method.
He asked if I knew how to do it like the video, and nope, I didn't. Told him I knew a way easier way, if he was game. I asked him for 2 sets of needle nose, which he had in his boat. Just grabbed the embedded barb with one pair, close to the hat, and told the kid to count to 3, and we'd get it out. When the kid said 1, I whacked the pliers with the other pliers, (at the right angle of course), and it came right out. Funniest thing was the kid was crying the whole time, but when that hook came out, he dried it right in, and was ready to get back to casting.
Doing it like this has worked every time for me. It's fast, easy, and painless. The only time it won't work is if you're by yourself and you stick your own hand!

I need to look into that method, but doubt I will ever not use the string method.

Logan won another tournament today. Hope to repeat tomorrow with me in the boat to make it 4 in a row.

Well, we pulled it off, but it was a grind and it was close. Weigh in was @ 3, and @ 2 we only had 14#. Found two good windblown points with small flats that had some better fish on them and we were able to cull our two small fish, and made a slight upgrade on another. Ended up with 18.57 and did not have a fish over 4#. Second had 18.42 with big fish @ 5.64.

Congrats! Sounds like work instead of fishing!
