Both my kids and their spouses are on a hunt in Africa. First afternoon, drove up on a lion in the truck and were sitting in back of truck watching when the lion took exception with the disturbance. I screen shot from the vid. You can hear him growling on the video
I was watching a couple videos on Facebook where lions charged hunters. I would think that a 12 gauge shotgun with #4 buckshot would be a lot better knock down gun at close range on a lion or something similar.

They use buckshot a lot on crippled leopards. But for the most part, they like to use a big bore rifle because they never know when they are following blood and walk around a bush and come face to face with elephant or cape buffalo. Elephants are absolutely thick over there
A 6.5 creedmore would be the last gun I shot at dangerous game. But a 7mag my daughter shot in Africa was she was the only hunter with all 1 shot kills.

.375 minimum on dangerous game in zimbabwe - except leopard. I would rather carry heavy than light with the over population of elephants and plenty of cape buffalo, hippo, and lion
