Dolgo Rootstock Source?

I order 12-18 "sedling from willis a few years ago. 3/4's of them were too small to graft and needed a year.

Chief river also has red splendor crabapple seedlings. I'd get a few from them too.

Saint Lawrence has nice siberian crab seedlings. Very close to dolgo. Ordered some last year, shipping was $25 for them. Might of been me, but siberian tend to prefer crabapples over regular full size apples. Saint lawrence claims to use them on crabapple that do not like regular rootstocks like anontovka. I am wondering how crabapple freidnly M111 is. I've had slow starts on several crabpple varieties on M111, but regular apples grow like weeds on them. There is some tribal knowledge to what rootstocks like what kinds of scions, but that info is hard to dig up.

I'm trying G890 at home and P18 at camp. G890 makes a nice smaller 12-14ft tree. P18 makes a full sized tree, but is designed to work well in low pH soils and cold climates. Got them from mehrabyan. Have anontovka on order, but might be cancelling them and getting a grafted liberty instead.

Is there any information on the root structure of P18? Fibrous or carrot style?

Interesting on the lower pH soils.

Anyone have a good source for Dolgo Rootstock for grafting this winter/spring? Chief River has them, they're 12-18" seedlings for $5.31/each or 2'-3' for $16.35 each if I buy atleast 25. Wonder what the diameter would be on a 12to18" seedling? I messaged Ryan at Bluehill to see if he will have any, but I haven't heard back from him. I am looking for 50.

I bought 5 Dolgo seedlings from there years ago with the idea of just seeing what they turned into. They all ended up real small sized crabs that only the birds would eat so I’ve since top grafted them over to other varieties that are growing well. Hoping for fruit this coming year.

Just ordered a half dozen of the Dolgo from Yellow River. Happy to find them. I am about out of space and only do a few trees a year now. Dolgo have done great for me and I greatly prefer them.

They are just listed as dolgo seedling trees - I can't remember if they are in the deciduous trees section or the shrub section. I ordered 20 from them again this year and they have worked well for grafting in prior years.

the going rate for small amount of rootstocks is 3-4 each. I ordered (2) dolgo seedlings for 10 each from mehrabyan nursery in NY. Pricey, but had room in the box. Probably let them go to maturity, see what I do when I get them.

That's sucks about yellow river nurseries not shipping to NY.

For rootstock, I'm sure their red splendor, or Ranetka would be just fine too.

Dolgo might be invasive, or has stricter requirements to be allow to come into the state. Virus free certifications, maybe pesticide treated to prevent bug migration.

IF turkey creek is listening....... I wish they sold rootstocks with their tree order. Even just one variety, or certain shipping dates only......

I am only doing a half dozen a year or less so I can live with the price. I have done a ton of business with Cummins nursery over the years and gone to their grafting and pruning classes numerous times.

I planted Dolgo seedlings from Lawyer Nursery (no longer in business) bareroot twenty-some years ago and most of those grew into impressive sized trees. A couple did turn out to be natural dwarfs though.

I ordered Dolgo seedlings from Burnt Ridge back around 2018 and babied them in pots for a full summer. They have grown 1-2' since then. All have bush type growth habits.

The Dolgo seedling rootstocks I got from Blue Hill and spring planted as bareroot are growing well.

The Dolgo seedlings I got from Alpha Nurseries just didn't seem to grow many roots after a full summer of babying them in pots before I planted them. That was year before last, I think.

My best luck has been with finding a Dolgo seedling tree that I like and checking for root or trunk suckers coming up, mounding dirt over them, and coming back in a couple few years to detach the ones that have sent out roots of their own. Photo attached.

Anyone graft to Prairie crabapple rootstock (malus ioensis) and how did they do for you? Growth rate, mature size, disease resistance etc.

They might still have anontovka if your ok with that option. I am getting P18, m111, and g890 from mehraban .Saint Lawrence has Siberian crab rootstock for $4 or 5 a piece. I think their shipping to me for just rootstocks is $25.

Might just might get 350-400 trees from mehrabyan or somebody who makes custom bareroots. Having a backyard u pick orchard. Put a few real late season ones in the corner for muzzleloader season candy. Got about 4 or so acres. Offer a premium price for organic u pick orchard offerings. Giving m111 and g890 a few years to see if they like my soil. Even more so for organic farming.

Got 8 years before I retire, not sure I want a bunch of folks in my backyard or not. If I was a dog, I'd probably have a muzzle on me........

I didn't realize until reading this thread that Yellow River Nurseries (located in Central Wisconsin) sells Dolgo seedling rootstock. Their catalog says "Dolgo Crabapple" and "Malus dolgo". The catalog goes on to describe Dolgo, not Dolgo seedling. I got curious and called them. Scott there indicated that everything they sell is grown from seed, including those, so they are indeed Dolgo seedlings. He said the seedlings will likely be available for pickup or shipping starting somewhere between April 15 and 25. The price per hundred of the 12" - 18" ones is $2.97 each. He emails customers when their orders are available for pickup. Shipping is extra.

I don't have any personal experience with them yet but have heard of them and all good. They and Cummings are mentioned in the same breath usually when people are talking about Ithaca Nurseries. I heard of Cummings first and went to many of their seminars and always just ordered there when I was buying regular apple trees. I Just ordered 8 Dolgo seedlings from Mehrayban to be delivered the week of March 16th. I would have picked them up, but they start shipping a month before they do pickup orders in April. I like to do my grafts in March when possible so they are done healing when the decent weather arrives in April.

3rd or 4th year ordering from mehrabyan. They're trees are good. Some of the m111 rootstock had skimpy roots, but everything else was great.

Other places I prefer to order barefoots from. But they have a decent selection, fair prices, and a wide selection of rootstock. Hard to find antonovka, g890, p18.

Looking for good rootstock, Saint Lawrence has been good too. Only siberian though, but might be all you need. Just like smaller trees at home like m7 m111 and g890.
