Umm, this is some terrible analysis done by a DNR "specialist".

Look at the perspective of the picture supposedly taken from the same stand. The cardboard also is not even close to the same positioning as He also says it was placed in a tree near where it happened. Well how the hell can you determine the size if it is a different tree.

It is no wonder why there is distrust with the DNR constant denial of cougars among other things.

I guess Ms. LaRue would know better than any of us having studied cougars since 2005. Based on what I see in that blurry pick I, having never seen a cougar in the wild in my life, um yeah, I'd say that's a cougar. False positive...LOL.

I found a better article. http://www.twincities.com/2016/11/11/2-likely-cougar-spotted-in-northern-minnesota-fighting/

I deal a lot with photographic evidence, reading the first article I couldn't believe he came to that conclusion. While I still believe it was a cougar, the second article shows the photos in a much better fashion (which should be blamed on the newspaper not the specialist).

Love this line..........

"We mistake bobcats for cougars all the time. We see wolves instead of coyotes, muskies instead of pike, and a dog can seem like just about anything."

Funny, I ALWAYS see a coyote, never a wolf or a dog, which is why I shoot first and question it later...............

And this............

"Northern Minnesota fighting cougars now believed to be bobcats"

The only ones who seem to "believe" they were bobs is the DNR.............

That's funny as all get out right there:p

A cardboard cut-out? Seriously?

Maybe they use a cardboard cut out when they do their deer estimates:

"Right there's one."
"Well geez, I do believe you're right. It sure looks like this here cardboard we have."
"It's not moving. Do you think it's just a lawn decoration."
"I don't think so, it looks exactly like this cardboard cut out. And cardboard is the best we have to go by."

We used to hear there were no coyotes in Pa. too.

I don't know about any particular state DNR, but I understand the current approach in many places is to put hair traps on trees where cats rub. DNA samples are taken for the hair traps to positively identify the animal. I've seen and taken pictures of some very large bobcats but nothing I would confuse with a mountain lion.

MN DNR has long said there are no mountain lions living in MN. Just young males that get pushed out of their home range in the Dakotas and are traveling through. I am sure 2 in one location did not fit that narrative very well. Some guy shot a female a few years ago and they found a way to spin that story too.

I mainly posted it because I read the first article and couldnt believe the work of our so called experts.

Also do bobcats even attack deer? That seems like a large task for a bobcat.

Bobcats do attack deer. I've see some trail camera video of a bobcat attacking a seemingly healthy adult doe. It was amazing footage.

Good to know. Wow, I bet that would be quite the video.

We had had a mountain lion kill a deer on our property in the winter once and there were tracks everywhere. The DNR first refused to believe it was a lion but then when they say the tracks they said it must have been a pet that got released. Never willing to accept truth.

Maybe we can send the MN carnivore specialist out to CA with his cardboard to confirm.

A bunch might need one way tickets.

I wonder how many deer hunter's license dollars went into this cardboard cut out?

I see bobcat

I see cougar
