Went for another walk this weekend. Dug up 3 more rootsuckers. Two of them didnt have much for roots, but the third should definitely live. All three went into the nursery. Also found a new crabapple tree. Right next to our walking trail but tucked up into an Autumn Olive which is why I never noticed it before. It's about 5ft tall but spindly. I will try to transplant it up north but will depend on how the root ball comes out.

I spent the morning cutting up tag alders and a few other odds and ends that were growing inside and around the outside of an apple tree exclosure. This is my last group exclosure and I was going to remove it this spring. They grew well and bloomed but never really fruited well. I still have around 20 southern crabapples grown from bare root seedlingsDid the southern crab apple not do well?
I did trim them back, but I don’t think cut them that far. I’ll try to check tomorrow.Did you cut the two with minimal roots back to just a couple buds?
Wild crab, not crap. Dang spell check or fat fingers!View attachment 90771View attachment 90772View attachment 90773I spent the morning cutting up tag alders and a few other odds and ends that were growing inside and around the outside of an apple tree exclosure. I think I will give the trees another year or two.
These are seedlings from a wild crap and nothing spectacular. One tree has fruit at about one inch.
I have some trees at 15 plus feet. I would not plant them again for wildlife. The B118 tree, how big did they grow to? Got a clue when the fruit drops? Would you plant a B118 seedling again for wildlife?
Treedaddy,
Any other good southern fruit other than dolgo? Looked at my arkansas black scions on the dolgo tree, thinking they took. Bud swell is pretty even between the grafts and the mother tree.
Kinda wished I had some frostbite at home. Would be a good zone 3 cross for a few varieties.
Screwed up my neck with this job and haven’t been able to do much since. I have a few trees and stumps in the orchard to cut off and a couple of small trees in a shooting lane.View attachment 90771View attachment 90772View attachment 90773I spent the morning cutting up tag alders and a few other odds and ends that were growing inside and around the outside of an apple tree exclosure. View attachment 91113This has to be one of our favorite apple sauces. Chestnut crab sauce may be a bit better.
Dessert consists of applesauce with a bit of Stevia and a handful of walnuts.
Those of you who don’t make applecrab sauce or dolgo jelly are missing out.
I tore my ACL late last fall and then had to get my family to help plant trees. It’s terrible having a big list and no way to cross things off!Screwed up my neck with this job and haven’t been able to do much since. The biggest cause of injury in old men is trying to do what you did 5 or more years ago.
I was considering planting one Prairie Sensation. That might not get done either.
Great info SandburView attachment 91186View attachment 91187Outback, the Buckman crab recently dropped the remainder of its fruit. They have cleaned that up. It was loaded this year.
