I shook most of the fruit off of the Buckman Crab this afternoon. I still haven’t checked the tree outback.
I also shook Golden Hornet, Red Splendor, and Dolgo (grafted).

I got some dolgo scion from turkey creek scion sale last year that was touted as later dropping dolgo. Wondering if thats big dog or not.
Got it growing on a toringo, but will probably trim a bit off and graft onto a P18 this year.

I don’t feel Big Dog is a dolgo seedling. I could be wrong. It is rootstock used decades back.

Anybody have a copy of clown's nose yet? Buckman and violi's are planted 30ft from the cabin. I have several violi's from last year planted at camp too. How you rate it compared to your other winter crabs? Think I got 4 violi's. I like that som of the buckman's on the tree are bird crab sized. Hopefully a few grouse make a few copies on the 650 acres and maybe the neighbors parcels too.

I need to check the tag on the Violi’s.
Buckman does not have bird sized crabs but much larger. The sister dolgo seedling is right next to it with bird sized fruit.
All of these dolgo seedlings of that age are big husky trees. I top worked two to other varieties and wonder what the rootstock would have produced.

The tag will probably indicate Anty as I assumed all SLN at that time were Anty.
As to Clown’s Nose. It is a much smaller and younger tree. I have it and two more marked as dolgo seedlings and suspect these were from seeds I collected . Who knows if I mixed things up. One of the other two I called Red Dog and we picked most of those. There are pictures somewhere above.
The Buckman Crab came from a bundle of dolgo seedlings that came from our Soil and Water Conservation District. I don’t know the source but suspect it was Lincoln-oaks in North Dakota.

SLN said they used ranetka on harder to graft crabapple varieties. Might be on that, who knows.

I went back and knocked a bushel or two of apples off of Buckman and a few other trees. Corn plots are cleaned out and alfalfa is all iced up so they can’t get to it.
I came home and found this little one. Second one this year.
I guess I should have shot a couple of these with the muzzleloader but just couldn’t do it.
I remember one very rough coated runt wandering back and forth in the corn plot and calling out. There was corn there then but he wasn’t eating.
I suspect his yearling Mom was killed during one of the seasons.

Poor little guy. Getting tougher for me to harvest a doe with little ones. Haven't done it in a few years. Usually look for single does, or just stick with the bucks. Feel bad about a real small coyote I shot in November. I was opening day, saw it try to get back up after being still for 20 minutes. That thing was like 15 pounds.
Saw the weather report for big moose, NY. -18 degrees tomorrow. Might be a workout for antonovka seedlings, MN 1734, and crossbow. OTher stuff other there are zone 3 tanks. 30-06 I know is tough, droptine not so much. I stopped grafting more after seeing dieback.
MAy or may not start pruning tomorrow after work. Is IT a bad idea to try to straighten branches in the winter? I snapped the limb socket on one or two in theearly fall and clipped them short and taped them back together. Both healed back together.

My neighbor brought me a bale of alfalfa and I have some corn. The deer were cautious around the bale. I will pull some more hay down and put a bit of corn on it this afternoon.
I haven’t been back to the Buckman Crab for a few days after I knocked lots of apples off of it. It’s over a quarter mile walk and I didn’t want to do it with -20 temps and lower wind chills.

I'm sure the deer will appreciate anything you put out for them. Temps are going down over much of the northern half of the U.S.

I have been knocking some crab apples off of the trees outback over the last few weeks. The first picture is a seedling and the old pole saw with a hook is great for shaking limbs.The second picture is the Buckman Crab.
Today we hit 35 degrees(above zero!) and when I shook the Buckman crab, many of the apples broke up when hitting the frozen snow. I shook the neighboring Big Dog and the apples held together when they hit the snow. Big Dog is more firm.
This might be an indication if Buckman is a good choice or not in southern climates.
I will only shake Buckman when temps are below freezing.
Al drops are getting eaten here, even bird crabs.

Nice looking trees. Are they semi or full size rootstock?
