Crabapple timeline

Pretty sure SLN advises on planting the graft union level or low. Maybe the union part is the start of making a tree hollow.

From experience dont clean out the hollow spot, seems to make the tree dry out and die quicker.

Keep up with the pics, I sure enjoy them. Told myself I am taking a break, but ordered 10 anty 4 m111 and 2 onx87 rootstocks from mehrabyan in ithaca NY. 2 store bought kieffer and bartlett pears are not looking great. Also, I have no liberty on m111, just b118. planting 10 a year almost anytime of the year with rootmaker pots is very doable task at camp.

Son in law is getting closer to buying his own and he hunts. Would be good having a few trees for him just incase.

Keep us posted on that noran tree. Looking for a good mid to late octboer dropping zone 3 tree. Hoping Crossbow would fit the bill, but isn't making alot of progress at camp, might not be a zone 3 tree. Got 30-06's next to crossbows in 3 spots at camp as a backup. Hewe's might be an option too. It's kind of USA's tree too, geroge washington spoke favorably about it, probably after one to many hard ciders.

Buckman Crab is not dropping yet. Grafted by Small Chunk for me on B118.

Violi’s is dropping at this time in 2025. My records show differently in 2024.
More - or less - rain this year, as compared to 2024, Bur?? Wondering if that plays a part in apples dropping earlier or later. I don't keep the detailed notes you do, and I'm 3 hours from our camp. That distance doesn't allow me to log drop times on all our trees up there.

Lack of rain here in SE Pa. (home) has many non-fruit trees dropping leaves for the last couple weeks. Drought stress they say.

Both dry and adequate rain. Good timing for farmers in my immediate area. Dry to get the crop in and dry for harvest. Adequate rain in between.

Too wet to the south. Drier to the north,

I've had one or two good hunting seasons because it as too wet. Left standing crops....... Best Deer I have shot was a corn field never harvested that year. Was 1st few days in december crossing the tractor path through the 80 acre parcel.

Got close to an inch last night here in hudson valley NY. Hopefully camp in the ADK's got some too. Had to reseed one failed foodplot.

Might be asking for some of that noran and some big dog for the scion exchange.

Hows sweet dog and Noran holding up? Looking to graft mid october to mid november dropping trees in zone 3. Looked at my tree chart, got alot of winter food, not so much prime hunting time trees.

I misquoted sweet dog. The SLN tree thats a seedling of sweetango is called big deer. Haven't had a chance to see my 2 year old big dog or blue pearmain at that 80 acre parcel. Got galarina, 30-06 and kerr up there. Probably closer to usda zone 5 than 4.

Big Dog has occasionally dropped a few apples but all of the wind makes it hard to evaluate. I haven’t looked at apple trees for a few days as I am serving as a mentor for disabled vets hunt on our local military reservation.

I like to call myself a guide as it makes it sound like I know what iB2C39E3C-6FDE-4971-8112-52BD99B7D30E.jpeg9C64A04B-CAD3-4D5C-BDFC-546FEFAB593F.jpeg06E4BDCA-4F84-4EB5-B424-F2337FF1AE6E.jpeg

Nice job on the disabled vets hunts, Bur!! Good service you're providing - to those who served. Good luck out there!!

As of two hours left in the hunt, success was 22%. My hunter had a fleeting chance but passed.

Applecrabs to be microwaved for a few days oatmeal. Chestnut, Sweet Dog, and Firecracker.

I just don’t understand why some people are reluctant to eat crabapples.

Checked some trees. I didn’t get down to Noran yet.

This is Red Baron. It is an old tree under stress from Sunscauld. It is dropping now.

I had a note of it dropping on Oct 5 last year. It hasn’t shown significant disease.

Big Dog is not dropping to any extent. This is the original tree, no spray.4EA79406-D8AD-4C65-BE2C-AD476C09D955.jpeg

Red Baron tends to be biennial.

Big Dog also skips a year now and then, as does Kerr.
