I just looked at my pots of Sandbur's seedlings on our patio. ALL of them are showing leaf buds just starting to open. Tiny red edges on them. All spent the winter outside on the patio. I'll transplant them into bigger pots soon.

Do you see differences in Bud color between seedlings? Differences in bud sizes between plants?
What types of seed did I send you?

You sent me Yellow Dog, Buckman, and Almata. I haven't seen much difference yet ..... but I suspect I will in a few more days. It got cold again here, so things may slow a bit. A bit warmer as the week goes on.

Yellow dog always has fine, small growth and buds. Who knows what the seedling will be like.
I have grown a few OP (open pollinated) Almata and kinderkrisp the last few years.
I thinned the Almata to the red leaved seedlings.
Buckman seedlings should be interesting.

I noticed last summer that the leaves of Yellow Dog were very finely toothed. I'm interested to see what kind of growth I get on them this summer. The Buckman's were smaller than YD by the end of the summer. YD seems pretty vigorous.

At one time I counted about 200 fruit trees. A few died . There is one pear and a handful of plums. My first plantings were flowering crabs, before I new better.
I found a tree tube down in the tag alders last year and another one this year. I cleared around them and got some growth. Near as I can remember, they were seedlings planted many years ago and neglected.
Now that I am retired, I will try working with some of those. They sure need it!

Sandbur: My long range plan is that the deer will eat a lot fewer of the apples, and people will eat a lot more of them. Now just isn't the right time to make that switch though.

I was looking at the Yellow Dog seedlings today. One of them is lagging behind the others as far as opening buds. That one has a different look to it - buds are slightly swollen, but not open like the others. The others have opened into small leaves where it's easy to see plenty of green. The buds look a bit redder on the one that's lagging behind. All seedlings have awakened except one, which looks like it froze possibly. Still plenty of live ones. I'll see how things progress.

Sanbur, I couldn't find where you originally posted about the Kerr on B.118. This is one of my best trees from the first year I planted. I would guess it is about 14'. Planted in 2014 I think it has had apples the last 3 years. It does have a bit of a lollipop look

Golden Hornet still holding a couple. I have high hopes for this tree because of its long late bloom time but it is a slow grower.

I need to check on height of my two Kerr. The one in the home orchard might be close to that height. Two years ago, I stripped all flowers off of the central leader and tied it to a 10 foot conduit. It didn’t fruit last year, first time in 3-4 years.
I probably need to remove more lower branches and not let them fruit for a few years to get more growth on B118. Or will they start to tip over, just like Wickson on B118?
