Coyote Problem

Well things have really slowed down deer-wise on my property. I know a lot has to do with surrounding crops being harvested but since that’s happened, I’ve had an immediate boost in coyote sightings. I’ve only hunted 3 times but seen one well before dusk and heard two well before dusk on another sit. I’m getting pictures every night and some mornings of 3-4 in a pack and running the entirety of the property.

Do you guys think this could have a big impact in deer bedding due to being bumped and what should I do? I’m not sure if it’s trapping season and don’t want to ruin my deer season chasing coyotes. But I do tend to think this is an issue. I’ve never seen deer tolerate coyotes in the same environment in the past.

I could set traps up around my barns as I’ve seen them try to get our chickens. Maybe that’s a way to lure them out of the hunting land without disturbing it too much.

If you aren't already a trapper I'd pass on doing it yourself. Find someone who's experienced to trap your place. Can be very effective.

Calling is also pretty efficient, but once again it helps if you know what you're doing.

I witness yotes and deer co-inhabiting all the time. If anything the deer are dominant, I've watched a doe chase off a yote many times. But ebery pack is different and if you have some aggressive dogs then they'll be a problem.

Thanks! I’ve set traps but never had any luck. I have shot a few over gut piles, but never had any luck calling them either.

I’ve witnessed the opposite, true story: Was hunting the timber right after a big snow In January. It was frigid. As the sun came up, saw a coyote stalking in towards a brush pile in front of me. I was expecting him to pounce on a rabbit.

When he jumped in, he landed right on top of a doe that was covered in snow, she busted up out of there like lightning!! I was so shocked I almost fell out of the tree lol

A skillful trapper is the best way to take care of a coyote problem quickly.

Yotes are smart. If you've set traps and had no luck then you are batting average for most new guys. You can look at trapping pages on Facebook to see if you can find someone that would hit your place. State organizations are out there too.

Did your doe kick the chit out of him? That would have been a fun hunt!

Coyote sightings always jump this time of year. The parents are teaching this year's pups to hunt. Deer live with coyotes every day.
Personally, I worry about any critter that kills fawns in the spring. Beyond that, I don't worry that much.
