College Basketball

Sorry Jayhawk fans, fearless prediction before game time.....Rock Chalk gets Shock'd! Seriously though, I haven't really seen either one play this season, just pulling for the dog like so many do when there own teams not playing?!!

Survive is right, they let Oregon hang around WAAAYYY too long in that game. The final looked worse than what it really was and they only won by 8. Couple bounces away from it being a potential buzzer beater game. Advance. Sweet Sixteen baby!!! Go Bucky!!

I don't know how they were able to turn kaminsky into a no nfactor. Guess it doesn't matter we got a w. Hayes is a stud, and future first rounder. I hope he stands by his words from a couple weeks ago and returns.

It was miserable to watch KU lose, but at least it was to a fellow Kansas team. I wish they would have been in a different Region. But, it was good for the Shocker fans to get this matchup as they have been wanting it for the last 3yrs. I would LOVE to see WSU break Kentucky's win streak (like they broke WSU's win streak in last yrs tournament).

Hayes has to come back at least one more year, if he were to enter the draft now, he would be buried deep in the second or third round. I do agree though, most likely next year or for sure after his senior season he will be a first round draft pick, likely a high one.

Mens hockey bracket announced, play starts Thursday. 25% Mn. clubs.

As a former college baseball player (only DIII) I love the College World Series... but I have to admit that the winter sports championship season is my favorite. March Madness for basketball, and hockey. I love bowl games too, but there is just something special about the championships happening in April and March.

Frank looked tired to me. Or not well. Or something. He looked lethargic.

I thought the same thing. Hopefully the few days rest will help.

You never know what Sparty team is going to show up this year, the good one showed up today.

In year's past, I've gotten frustrated at times with all the Izzo talk. Sure, he generally gets them to play highly disciplined BB, but it's pretty easy to be a great coach when you have great players, and he's had a lot of very talented teams over the years. I don't believe this is one of them. That's why, for as much as all the Izzo talk can get a bit old at times, I believe he's right there with Bo as two of the greatest college coaches of all time. It isn't success with great teams that coaches should be judged on, IMO. It's success with average to poor teams that makes a coach in my book. To me, this run is another example of why Izzo is a great coach. He seems to get his teams to play at their highest level when it matters most more than any other coach that comes to mind. Frankly, that is a trait I believe he has over Bo. On the flip side, few if any can coach marginal talent into a tourney team as consistently as Bo does.

The Oregon/WI game was simply a matter of a great team (WI) having generally an off night on offense, but still forcing a win. It's what great teams are supposed to do. Frankly, regardless of what happens in the rest of the tourney, I firmly believe that this is the best, most talented Badger basketball team I've seen in 38 years.

Hayes would not be drafted, there is no third round. Badgers are the great white hope team.
Opps, your right NoFo, forgot about the whole 2 round draft they have now. It has been quite a number of years since they went to that format, but that just tells you how little I actually follow the NBA, just about as close as I follow MLS Soccer.

No question Steve. When this team plays poor they are about as good as they are on a good night for a normal year.

Watching Izzo as I've grown up, I can say that he generally gets his teams to be as good as or as close to as good as they can be. I don't think they've had a team lately that has been, talent wise, championship caliber. But each year, I'm confident that he'll figure out a way to get wins with what he has. To me, other than what you point out about winning with a bad team, I think that his year to year consistency is what I find impressive. There is very little boom and bust with him, but I think that he does this on purpose. I don't feel like he actively recruits all of the huge studs because he wants players that will be team players.. It may also be that lots of these guys know that he'll have no problem benching them if they aren't following his rules. It's not to say that the superstars can't be team players, but I think that often times he is more interested in the potential of "what can this player do for us in 2 or 3 years as they adapt and find their own role in our system and as I coach them" rather than just getting the most talented players. Don't get me wrong, he absolutely recruits talent, but I think he also puts a big emphasis on a players coachability. On that topic, I think that a lot is to be said for his assistant coaches as well. When players get SO much better through the season, it's not just the head coach that is responsible, but everyone involved. Even on a year to year basis, his players get a lot better, and I think this is in large part to the coaching staff around him. I think the same can be said for the development of Kaminsky as well. I don't believe for a second that Bo is out there teaching him post moves and physically practicing with him.... but he IS responsible for finding the people to make his players better.

I'm certainly partial on this topic. I'm an absolute Izzo fan, just because he's so consistent. As far as actual championships, I'd say he is one of the underachieving big-time head coaches, but he is one of the best when March rolls around.

I would agree Steve! I have been following Badger hoops since the early '80s when they were really bad, and they have never had as many talented players on the team at the same time. They have always had a great player or two in the front court and mediocre backcourt guys or vice versa, never a combination of the talent level they have now in both the post players and the perimeter players.

I'm sure I'm a bit biased as well, as I watch more Big 10 BB than any other conference. That said, I'll take Bo and Izzo over any other coaches in college BB any day and love my odds of them molding a bunch of just out of HS kids into a real team. Sure Duke, Kentucky, NC, Georgetown of the right before, during and after Patrick Ewing (sp?) yrs and so on, they always seem to have scary good teams. That said, they also always have scary good talent. WI & MI State generally don't (though I'd say historically MI State has better talent than WI...Just look at the player base they have to pull from compared to the dairy farms of WI). Heck, many years I think WI & MI State's best players would have an issue cracking the starting lineups of the star studded BB schools that historically get all the press. I'm not saying their coaches are slouches, just that it's soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much easier to make it to the tourney ## yrs in a row, the sweet 16 ## yrs out of the last ## and have ## Final 4s and # tourney championships when 2-4 of your starting lineup will be drafted that year.

P.S. I agree that their assistants are doing a ton of the teaching, but also agree getting great assistants is a critical part of being a great head coach.

All this talk is fascinating but can they just beat Arizona so I can win my pool.

Larry Brown said that if Kentucky was in the eastern confernce of the NBA that they would make the playoffs. I'm not sure I buy that but they are something else that is for sure.

I don't think Seldon is a "go to guy". He is physically talented but like most of the KU team right now he plays like a freshman when the pressure is on. I don't know if he can make it pro. I think a lot would have to go right for him to last in the NBA.

93 here today, heading up to staples for some pregame adult beverage, scalp sits for 1/2 price and watch the badgers/ az doubleheader.

Bring home a W for the W
