College Basketball

Think Kaminsky's 31 solidified his Naismith/Wooden award chances at all? I'd like to think it did.

I'm not sure when they vote on this (is it just regular season or does it include some post season?) but another solid week or two from him and I'd be disappointed if he doesn't win it. Enjoy the next few weeks of Frank because we don't get them this good very often!
Upcoming Naismith Awards Dates:
  • Ten Semifinalists - Tuesday, March 3, 2015
  • Four Finalists - Sunday, March 22, 2015
  • Winner - Sunday, April 5, 2015

Looks like the Wooden Award gets announced on April 10th(8pm) on ESPN2.

I'm pretty jacked to be in the barn, right behind the Badgers bench yelling at the Grinch and company on Thursday. I know we have little chance, but the Barn is usually a tough place to pull out a W for the away team!

I would agree SC, there are many other Big Ten venues that I would rather play in as a visiting team than the Barn. Tough gig for sure.

It must be March, some crazy good games went down tonight!

Mn is gonna find out what real basketball is!

Smallchunk how did it go in the barn tonight??

Dipper, I like your home state homerdum BUT as a Badger alum(1980) let me educate You on National titles. Football-Gophers 7, Badgers 0! Bball- Gophers 3, Badgers 1. Twins vs. Brewers? Wild vs. nevermind. Bucks 1-MLakers 1
I take it back mn didn't have a clue what just hit them.
Not sure what most of your agenda items have to do with the game.... But I heard mn has a mean cribbage team.

Ashamed to say never met a more classless, bloviating fan base then Wisconsin. Hows Mens/womens hockey ,swimming, gymnastics, vball, baseball, softball or wrestling working for the Badgers vs, the Gophers this year Dip? Total title 9 sports the Gophers smoke the Badgers. Heck do the Badgers even have a baseball team? Gopher wrestling? Gopher womens hockey lost 1 game in 2 years. Mn. Cribbage? Badger beer pong is no doubt dominate.:)
One other thing to consider is that every sport you mentioned that the Gophers appear to best the Badgers at are also the ones that do nothing but cost the Universities money. Seems that in the sports that are the real money makers(Football and men's BBall) Bucky has ruled the roost for a hot minute, which is what really matters in Collegiate sports today whether anyone will admit it or not. Just sayin'.

Only two sports matter. Football and basketball.
It's so weird hearing this. Growing up near Detroit (and thus, only a skip away from Canada) hockey was the biggest thing. Football and baseball were big, but hockey was king. Growing up we were always in awe of how many kids got drafted out of high school (and not just from St. Mary's). It's not uncommon for a high school player, that played for their high school and not the National Development Program, to get drafted. But it's pretty rare to get more than one or two. Minnesota has kids going in the top rounds every year. It never really occurred to me that hockey wasn't huge in the rest of the great lakes states.

The big 3 in Michigan for our schools (MSU, U of M, Western, Ferris, etc...) are football, basketball, and hockey. Baseball is kind of up there, but northern states, at the college level, are generally pretty average when compared to the south.

One thing I DO know, is that Minnesota high school hockey is king. Michigan is pretty darn good, but nationally it's not even that close. I wish Michigan would take a page from their book and get the big boys playing for high schools rather than AAA clubs.

In the Metro you'd do well knowing those things...in my neck of the woods...they'd look at you like you're from Mars.

My amazing wife had to ask the bar beeatch to put the Gopher/Badger game on tonight. Other than me...zero interested people watching the game
the only thing I like better than ribbing mn sports, is shooting mn bucks when they don't claim to have any deer. Here's a toast to a badger victory and a pretty mn 10 pointer on my wall!

Mens and womens hockey are $$$ making revenue sports. The Gopher women have won 2 NT's in 3 years. The Gopher mens team have 18/23 players already nhl draft picks. The Badger mens hockey team is 4-22-4! The Gopher head coaches kid is the star at ND as was not offered a shollie by his Dad. Gopher hockey is Duke basketball, You recruit them. Try getting a ticket at Marriucci arena on stubhub.

I agree with all of the above, but to be fair, most players once they get the the D1 level have been drafted. By their senior year, it's not uncommon for students to have been drafted multiple times. It's a really interesting dynamic that the NHL draft has with being able to come back after being drafted. You get a lot of students finishing their degrees.

I miss the CCHA. Now I get to look forward to watching Purdue and Penn St.... MSU, Western, Ferris St. OSU, Miami, Michigan Tech, etc... Almost always someone in the frozen four. We basically gained being able to play Minnesota and lost a bunch of other teams. I feel like leaving and the WCHA, playing North Dakota and Denver is a pretty big bummer for Minnesota. For the teams that were usually relevant in the CCHA and the WCHA, going to big ten was kind of a loss.

The eastern leagues will always be incredible, but I'd like to see, as a fan (but not as a school starting a new program) a Midwest Conference with the major players.

Kudos dip, You can always roll into da big city, St.Point and take in some d3 Pointer sports. I actually get their fball games here on FCS central, they have about 400 butts in the seats, roughly 6,000 less than our high school games here.
Haha than I gots to take a shower.
Plus my ole lady doesn't like wearing a bra, I get plenty of entertainment at the Marion cattle auction.

Lots of them have that problem, I would say that the perennial big dogs (Denver, North Dakota, Minnesota) and especially since they get a year or two in while playing juniors. I have no doubt that Minnesota has a pretty large number compared to most of the other schools.

I've always been amazed at how many of the now Big10 schools, pretty much other than Minnesota, are year to year in their talent. I mean a few years ago U of M was garbage and MSU was great, now it's the opposite. I guess that's one thing that I love about college hockey. You've got the big guys every single year, but then after that, there's usually a pretty good amount of teams that have just had a great year.

One thing I never though about was whether or not the the degree from the Ivy's causes more of their players to stay. In the Midwest, I'm not sure I'd say that I'd stay for all 4 years for my degree if I were to be drafted, but out East the list goes on. It'd be really interesting to see a statistic on the percentage of students from the more "prestigious" East coast schools.

Yeah, I knew that right when I posted it. I was mainly thinking of BU and BC when I said that about the degree. Those kids have lots of options, but other than that I guess you're right. I guess I always figured that if you had one offer, you'd have a few. Though it's needless to say there are top teams and lower tier.

As for the international students, I'm actually really excited that they're getting in the college game more. It wasn't uncommon for U of M to have someone from Europe, but I think it was only a handful over the course of 10 years. I don't think that they'll be able to do anything but make it better. It'll be really interesting to see if, in the future, we get a dynamic in which a much larger number of europeans are playing here, and possibly more kids going over their to play.

Overall, I'm glad that hockey is one of the college sports that has avoided major mishaps, and I'm glad that it's still competitive without the major politics we see in the other sports, despite having only 59(?) teams.

Isn't this a basketball thread? Time for a hockey thread

If they get to sunday of the B1G tourney w/o a loss I think they'll be a 1, maybe even regardless of what happens in that game. It has never seemed to help us in the past when we've won it.

I admire your optimism, but they'd need more than to get to the big 10 championship game without a loss (agree that the outcome of that game never seems to matter, as the selection committee is already working on brackets before the game is done). They need Nova or Duke to lose, as well, and even that isn't a lock to give them a #1. They really needed to beat Maryland (or to not have lost at Rut).
