Building Whitetail Utopia Article by Steve Bartylla

"LIGHTBULB"
How about Steve B. gets his own blog/thread here and he can post "Steve B.'s Monthly dose of wisdom" or some BS like that?????

Sort of didn't think this thru - sort of put Steve B on the spot with this - sorry Steve that was't my intention. I know I really value your perspective and knowledge - and I sort of blurted that out there and didn't think about it from your perspective.

No worries, Jay. I don't feel like I've been put on the spot. Either way, I would just explain that I come here for fun, learning and friends. If I did something like that, it turns into work and this is my break from work, if that makes any sense.

Makes perfect sense.

I dropped NAW because of the countless stories of big bucks and felt I was not learning a thing except for the occasional habitat articles. Just too much emphasis on big bucks, which I will never see.

D and DH I can relate to and read it cover to cover. I like John Ozoga. The rut prediction from CA are just BS.

I would agree ... all these mags were starting to post the top ).0001 % of hunter success which was not real ... D&DH was becoming worse than the USA as a 30 second read ...

Doing nothing more than fueling the fire of unrealistic expectations in a society driven by instant gradification.

What ever happened to hard work and patience?

I'm speaking to the magazines in general - not Steve B's work.

Magazines in general like sell "dreams" and I do not fault them for it once bit. I'm sure it would be a hit to sales if they featured hunting techniques from a guy with nothing larger than 110" or a guy who shoots a 4yr old once every 4-5 years. In both cases, the guy might be every bit the hunter or more as the guy who grew up on a nice family farm in a prime area and has a wall full of 150"+ deer. They may have lost your sale but there are more of those out there chasing the dream than those wanting to keep it "real".

First I will say some are far worse than others. There are a few of the TV people I can't stand!

The worst ones are not selling "dreams" - it's antler porn! It's just as fake, rehearsed, not even close to real life and something is gett'n the shaft!

Dear Penthouse/NAW,
You will never guess what happened to me - Lies, falsifications, half-truths, and flat out fantasy! And a picture with a big rack that in many cases only money can buy!

I agree that they sell what people want - just not what I want. Every once in a while they toss something truely tangible in them, but you got to wade thru the filth to find it - sticky pages and all!!!! (couldn't find the proper smilie)

I may have taken this analogy a little too far - delete if needed! Don't mean to offend - just aggrivated.

I found a link on the Gamekeepers website for a free trial issue. I plan to check it out but with the tagline "Farming for Wildlife" and from what I see on their website, it may be primarily a vehicle to sell food plot seed.

AHAH!! A profit scheme, eh? :) Ya gotta know that these rags are all trying to appeal to a board base of customers demand. No demand = no customers. Why do we read about big bucks?......because that is what sells the magazine. Go too far out of what people want......and your going to be looking for work. I just buy a couple of magazines these days to keep up on new guns and products. I seldom read deer stories or too many hype-based articles. I guess I'm done chasing big antlers.....never really was a trophy hunter. :)

I like to read any articles on deer where I can learn useful (and true) information. Much of what I read is hype or from an author who I do not have faith in.

Trophy bucks-It would be nice to shoot another big one, but a yearling is fine with me. I would like to see a few bigger bucks around for other hunters to view or shoot. If my daughters, wife, or a neighbor's family shoots a big one, that would be great. Does not really need to be me.

I have to admit I'm a bit of an antler freak. But it's a little different for me. I always feel bad when I shoot a younger deer because I think "that deer should of seen a few more years just to see it's potential and lived a little life ". Kinda sappy but it's the way I feel.
