Bo’s Hideway. Central Va

My time has been severely limited as of late because of my work schedule. Guy I work with had to go out for a total knee replacement putting me on 12 hours, but I found a little bit of time to get down to the land and do a little bit today.

Started by pruning some fruit trees and removing some suckers on them and the few chestnuts I have planted. First time pruning so open to suggestions.

I was unsure of what to do with this chestnut because of the structure at this point.

And these two year old sawtooths also have me wondering what to do… I have good growth but I am not sure whether to prune them or let them go.

And I also went and looked at a place to put in a potentially quarter to half acre kill plot that would be 300 yards from my main plot. The pictures of the are are from a video but I’m trying to show
what I will be dealing with to get it in and I’m wondering if it will be worth it. Open to thoughts there as well.

I also put a knew eva foam floor in the bottom of the blind, picked them up at a yard sale for 50c

My time has been extremely limited, but yesterday I got out for the 2.5 hours before dark after work. To put in this new food plot, I would have to cut a path around the western side of the property. I had stopped the path at my
Last ladder stand and this new “micro” plot is going to be about 150 yards or so past this stand. I got the path cut almost all the way to it yesterday.

Not too bad for 2.5 hours of work. I’m gonna try to start cutting in the plot over the next few days in the afternoons.

Also I have been wanting to upgrade some of the ladders both here and up at the club, so I jumped on three of these a few days ago at the local Walmart.

And my clover blend has come in finally, now I’m just waiting on the chicory to come in and I will try to get that seed in the ground.

That’s a great price on the stands. They never last that long around here to get to that price

Well not much of an update but, got back in there to work on clearing the new little kill plot, goal here is to pull deer out of my cutover and the neighbors cutover to the north. Still got some work to do but it’s only gonna be about a quarter of an acre. Thinking winter rye or oats in this little small plot unless I can get clover established in it. The neighbors cutover is the daylight you see behind it, and there is only one tree I can put a stand in to hunt it but it will be good for two different wind directions.

It’s getting closer and closer to being opened all the way up.

I just missed out on some of the single 21 ft. Muddy ladder stands. They had them on sale for $89 and I didn't go back and grab them soon enough.

So last year I got some American plum seedlings from nativ nurseries and put them in pots. Only one of them really did any noticeable growing but I took them out yesterday and planted all 4 of them. I am hoping these will grow in a tight cluster on this edge and produce some fruit. Hopefully all 4 make it. We will see I guess.

I also planted some nwsg plugs on the edge of the main food plot. Guess I will see what happens there as well.

My main clover plot is really looking good to start the year. Looks even better when this happens, maybe Saturday I can kill him in the plot.

The clover and the trophy rock really seem to be pulling the herd in as well, it is nothing to get 8-9 deer in the plot at one time, these 5 frequent the trophy rock right regular together.

Here it is April 5th and I’ve still got deer holding both sides. Got a picture of a different buck last week but this one was cruising around this morning. Oughta look pretty good this year.

Went to the land today to get a little bit of stuff done once I got out of the woods turkey hunting. Not a whole lot to share other than the main plot which is clover looks great. Had to cut the winter rye off of it today, it was getting way too tall.

Also put up two cedar bluebird houses my dad made on this back plot.

And I have a question regarding this crabapple tree, this is its 3rd year in the ground. Are these the beginning of crab apples???!

Well it’s looking like a familiar face is back…. And his friend looks like he has brows for days. Things could get interesting!

Went down and bushhogged the plot today, lots of clover but it was getting over run with dog fennel. Need to figure out how to curb that problem.

Also put a new ladder up for muzzleloader and shotgun. Will bow hunt it at times as well.

Atta boy, everything looks great bud! Those are crabapples starting to form in case you never got an answer.

Between buying a house and a crazy work schedule I really haven’t had time to do much at the land this year which is pretty disappointing but life happens. I have kept up with the bushhogging and there are two great bucks on the property this year.
You will recognize one from years past, he has thrown all types of junk on his left side this year.

And now that I got the ford 861 diesel running well I decided I wanted another small tractor project. Picked up this running 9n for 1k. Just wanted something to tinker with now that the other one is done.

Wow. That buck is wild looking.

Dang, you have some good history with that old horse! I'd be hunting him or nothing this year. Good luck!

Well sitting in the stand on the clover plot this evening, only the 3rd sit on it of the year. The bucks are starting to move and this time lot is loaded most evenings. Had 12 in this acre plot the other evening. Overall I’m happy with how it turned out. Still patchy in a few spots but it’s holding the deer.

Haven’t gotten a pic of the old horse since velvet come off but he’s been seen around a few times. This is what he turned into this year

I had a new fade show up last night that I have never gotten a picture of too my knowledge and I’m honestly not sure which is bigger of the two. Maybe he will show this evening.

And the ten that was hanging with the old tall one is sporadic but still get pics of him from time to time

Well with the ‘23 season over and two of my target bucks dead on other places it’s time to get to work. I am starting with Jack and squirting gums on the cutover to try to open the canopy and get some cover back. Probably did 200 trees today before the antique hatchet I was using gave up the ghost. Progress will resume when the new one arrives.

I also added 4 ropes today to see if they will work here. Never tried mock scrapes so I hung a 1” hemp rope in places they enter or leave the plot to see what happens. Will add some scent to them once I give them time to lose any unnatural scent.

We only killed one buck on my place this year and I’m glad dad killed him with the muzzleloader. It’s a buck I shot with the bow at first light with the bow and got zero penetration. I hit just a touch forward and hit him square in the shoulder. My broadhead was in him when dad cleaned him. He was a freaky joker to begin with. I’m just glad he wasn’t dead and I couldn’t find him. The mizzleloader took care of it
