Is this a tool of some sort? Seemed too perfect not to be something

I

If you were developing land in the arid southwest and there was some type of native population that was upset about it - I think they'd consider that a "hand stone".

Used to blow my mind the pile of rocks that were considered artifacts but just looked like smoother than normal rocks to me.

@hillrunner I've mentioned what we look for in our creeks in a couple of posts above - #292 and 294.

Some streams are definitely better than others. And it seems like there are sections of the same creek that can be wildly different. I would focus my time on gravel beds with rocks that are at least an inch and diameter. Our best points are typically found in gravel beds with much larger rocks, though.

Found an interesting on. Looks like a scribe or leather hole punch. Fits very well between thumb and fore finger. Any other thoughts?

To me that looks like a bird effigy that may have been a perforator with the beak. The beak and head proportions are too similar to not be that.

Regardless, that is super neat!

Yes, closer look resembles a bird figure. Interesting.

Holy smokes that's a killer. Looks like our local starved rock banded chert. Any idea what it is? What are you typing it as? Nice score!

In a dry creek bed?

Hunted all morning and found a shed and a broken peice, still a good day.

Lakeshore, where an old river cutoff meets a bluff, which is now part of a lake. The chert looks like it is Jeff city, don't know what type it is.
I just asked Chris and he said Kirk corner notch 100%

FInding a kirk site or any site early archaic would be awesome. I only know of two early archaic sites here, one dalton and one corner notched, both are weird because of elevation and lack of current water. I think this site is much later maybe jacks reef or afton, just found this site, don't have much to go on yet.

Keep us posted what else turns up there. We walked in some chisel plowed stalks this afternoon for an hour and came up empty handed.

I've been out a few times this winter and spring and finally found something worth sharing today. This is pretty unique coloring for what we normally find around here.

You guys are doing great! I've been out on some half hearted attempts. My spot is tall corn stubble right now it's difficult to even see dirt.

Cool one! Is that jasper? What kind is it?

It seems a little too transparent for what I think of Jasper. I just think it is a neat red chert of some kind.

As far as the type of point...I am stumped. The closest I can find is a re-worked Madison side notch, but that doesn't fit the region all that well. There was definitely an attempt at a side notch, and the base may have been repurposed. It seems like an intact point but nothing I can find on projectilepoints really matches with it.
