Apple trees and shade?

I have several inside corners of big ag fields I'm thinking about planting apple trees next week but just not sure about how much shade/how many hours of direct sunlight apple trees prefer. 4.5-5ft Arkansas Black and Granny Smith...never planted these before.

I'm all ears.

A minimum of 6 hours of full sunlight and again the more the better.

I make sure my South and East exposures are kept open to let in the sunlight. I fertilize my trees every spring with stakes around the drip line. I like to eliminate any berry bushes or other competition for water and sun inside the drip line of my trees.

I'll also say to make sure you cage them. Apple trees are a preferred species for rubbing and especially so when they are along edges.
And don't forget frost issues. Try to stay away from planting in frost pockets.

These only get 4-5 hours of mid day sun. They do Ok at 2- 3 bushel per tree.

I would also add besides caging, protect the bottom 2 1/2' of trunk with aluminum screen or a good tree wrap so mice and rabbits can't girdle them.
