A little further down the road from Paradise

dang it, I wanted to believe they didn’t exist on my property…but I unearthed my first poisonous snake in ky. He get separated from himself with the bucket of the skid steer

I do hate to see those things! I have not encountered any on my property....yet.

I actually do not kill rattlers or copperheads any more; I think the pigs have just about wiped them out in my area. Now I will go Dirty Harry on a cottonmouth… and did a week ago.

I’ll take those snakes over hogs. Scared to death they will take hold in our area one day

I know you boys out East have far more snakes than me and must run into them more, but I can’t make myself do it. I’ve had a mower and we had one tractor “inhabited” by a pack rat. I’ll take any snake that I can get…

Finally caught a decent one. Been culling for a while…maybe it’s paying off? Too many variables but I like to believe it’s the smoking gun!

Oh also, looks at all the sericea lespedeza at my feet. It’s everywhere in my yard. I’m going to have to spray with triclopyr before the summers over.

How big is your pond?

It’s about 2.5 acres. Not big but big enough to produce a couple good fish if managed well

What bait fish is it stocked with?

I think the gators and the pigs have taken care of most of the snakes here. I often used to see a half dozen cotton mouths a day. Have not seen one this year. Pigs are gone now, also

I don’t like to brag…but I do have some pretty good tick habitat. Great hatch this year

I couldnt like that post. I have had seed ticks before and thought I was going to die. Aint a fan of chiggers, either. I would have burned those pants

Just reminded me that I need to go spray down our clothes with permethrin.

I get them like that on the one farm pants just crawling with them sometimes it has seemed to have gotten a little better since burning off some of the pastures I believe that helps.

Very interesting end of summer/start of deer season. I’ve found a couple dead deer from ehd and buzzard signals that’s there’s many more. I have 2.6 miles of a major creek and numerous feeders and a couple ponds. This time of year it’s impossible for me to know what is dead. I found one Saturday that i literally stumbled within feet of laying in a road. No smell or buzzards yet. That leads to my observation both on cameras and in person. My deer numbers are way down. I have two feeders out since mid/end of August. One hasn’t gotten a single buck and the other has 2 small bucks a couple weeks ago and that’s it. When I say this is a staggering change from years past, I can remember evenings of getting upwards of 10 different bucks in September visiting a single feeder. Would never go a day without at least a couple bucks stopping by. I have a 200 acre section that I have three cameras out since July. Couple thousand pics. One racked buck and one spike…ONE. A 60 acre bean field where I was routinely seeing 30-40 deer (20 or so bucks) earlier this summer and years past, Saturday I saw 10 deer. Either every buck has an amazing ability to avoid cameras which they never displayed in the past, or I’m going to have a lot deadheads to pick up in January. Depressing. But I guess I don’t have to hammer does this season.

You know your property and history best, but if I were a betting man, I'd say its just a function of the time of year. People across the Midwest are reporting buck pictures to be reduced right now. I don't have a mature buck or shooter in WI at the moment either, but I need 3 more weeks before panic/cope set in because I've been here before.

Acorns are dropping
Beans are changing
Bachelor groups are breaking up
Your season is open (even if you aren't pressuring them, someone is)

Point being, lots going on right now. I have to exercise caution from the panic myself at the moment but remind myself that cameras on scrapes start to produce the bucks when the calendar turns to October.

All good points and if I didn’t have any history I’d say you would put my mind at ease but…I do have history and this is unlike any I’ve experienced. Even with my other farms. Imagine owning 200 acres and not getting but one buck with more than 11” of antlers in 2 months. I believe I’d buy a bass boat. Thankfully I have three bucks that I’d shoot if they survive the next couple days we finally have rain. Will be interesting how the season goes once I finally get in the stand.

Yep. I think it’s the acorn drop. My buck pics have dropped way off last few weeks also

I have an 8 acre food plot - my favorite place to hunt on my land. It is next to a fifty acre, six year old clear cut. I have been baiting there since late July and have a pictures of multiple does, fawns, and turkeys - and two 2/3 yr old 8 pts and a spike. Last week I put out a bait site on the other side of the six yr old clearcut. Within five days, I had six different bucks using it - a couple decent 3 yr olds.

Now that said, you know your property better than anyone. My deer, bucks included, will not totally leave feed sites when the acorns fall. They might slow down, but they dont stop. If you are finding dead deer, you arent finding all of them. I would tend to believe you know what you are talking about - in this case😎
