11 days to a successful lawnmower plot

Yep. Often we don’t plant till Halloween because often we get little to no rain in October.

This is an update. Pics taken yesterday.

Buckwheat is being grazed hard. I estimate 25% of tops already eaten.

Other species are slowly coming up under the buckwheat very well.

We have turned dry. The buckwheat is helping to shade the other stuff coming up from the hot sun. This is a great benefit in holding moisture. More rain forecasted in a few days.

Chicory is probably the least desirable thing I have planted. Typically heads out, goes to seed, with very little interest from the deer.
My chicory has never gone to seed. The deer are on it before it has a chance to seed out. I have about a 2ac chicory/clover plot that gets hammered. I mix in about 150lbs of cereal rye every fall and mow it down around July 1.

Yeah, Chicory seems to be preferred over clover to me in Northern and central MN. Might have something to do with natural and pasture clover being everywhere.

Glad I planted early. We are now in a drought and no rain in the forecast. Below is another lawnmower plot I did this year. I left out the buckwheat in this one.

PS - the break in the middle is a spring covered in jewelweed.

That’s beautiful!

My deer don’t let brassica grow that long at my place. If I didn’t add clover to the mix I would have nothing left.

Looks good. Looked at mine today. I looked at you photos just now and remembered I put a good bit of brassicas in my plot. Hard to tell today. Rye is looking good despite barely any rain since the end of September.

I was planning on doing a throw and mow this fall, but we never got the rains in time.

Straight through planting season, we went 85 days without a drop of rain. Now that it is too late to plant, we got rain last Monday.
