    Apple Tree winter Hardiness

Here’s a picture taken a couple days ago of one of my second leaf Trailman crabs. It has a cluster of six baby crabs already. It was one of the first to green up this spring. I plan on removing all but one to see what kind of fruit to expect.

    Northern whitetail crabs

My NWC order showed up today. I’m very impressed with the size of their trees! I plan on getting them in the ground tomorrow. My order consisted with three DropTine crab, three 30-06 crab, one Liberty, and one Enterprise. The two apple trees are both on m.111 rootstock according to Terry. They...

    Winter Vole Damage

With warm weather and rain we experienced in central Wisconsin the last couple of days the snow pack has receded enough to show what our local vole population was up to. Judging by the amount of dropping’s present they’ve been busy for the better part of the winter. I’m not sure what variety of...

    Jung Seed Company Rootstock

I did some checking to find out what rootstock Jung’s was using for their Apple tree’s. I called the customer service line and they told me that their Stanard trees were grafted on B.118, Semi-dwarf are on M7, and Dwarf was on Bud 9. They offer a fair selection of Standard fruit trees varieties...

    Remesh 150'

The cheapest I have paid for a 150’ roll of 5’ concrete mesh was $42.88. That was at the Waupaca, Wisconsin Fleet Farm last March. They had it on clearance. They also had the 50’ rolls for $12.88. I took my full size truck and a trailer and stocked up! I’m set for awhile.

    winter kill

We went into fall with adequate moisture and normal temperatures. Although the first couple of weeks of the new year were cold. Nighttime temps dipping down in the -15 to -20 range. Which is pretty normal, we had snow pack too. Of the 90 Apple and pear trees I have these were the three that...

    winter kill

I went out today to check on the progress of the Apple trees and how they are responding. The first is a third leaf Galarina on B.118. The top has been slowly yellowing and dying throughout the summer. It has been vigorously growing new shoots above the graft. I’m guessing the top will...

    winter kill

Here’s a update on the Apple trees that didn’t want to wake up this spring. They were purchased from Cummins Nursery and planted in the spring of 2016 all on B.118 rootstock. The first one is a Galarina that came back around 80%. Some of the tips browned up but new leaves are growing where there...

    winter kill

That’s what my trees are doing as well pushing out new growth out of the trunks. The existing branches are bare as well. I bent some of the branches until they broke and they were green under the bark. Some of the buds seemed to be swollen. Not sure what to expect. Time will tell I guess.

    winter kill

I also had winter kill on two Galarina’s and a Florina Querina on B.118 rootstock. All third leaf from Cummins. Central Wisconsin zone 4b.

    Fleet Farm concrete wire remesh!

Thanks for the heads up guys! Couldn’t resist and had to take advantage of these unbelievable prices. I ended up stopping at our local Fleet Farm and they too matched Blaine’s price. I bought there last 3 rolls of 50’ which is the cheapest route at $12.88 a roll. And two 150’ rolls at $42.88 a...
