Summer Mushrooms are up

ruskbucks

5 year old buck +
I've been finding quite a few lately with the last good rain. We found a huge chicken, meadow mushrooms, fairy rings, and a lot of boletus. No chanterelles or trumpets yet. Mosquitos are terrible. Anybody else been out?

I haven't, and it was on my bucket list for the year. I know my dad's place has puffballs and I've been wanting to try them. I also know we've got chickens on our property up north because I saw them right after I sprayed over them last year. I think I also found an oyster on a downed log when we were building stands back in early July. Trouble is, each time I'm out, it's either hotter than hell and I'm behind on habitat projects, or the bugs are trying to devour me. Often times both.

Any pictures?

Is that a giant chicken and a basket full of trumpets? Nice haul!

I had thought about looking for mushrooms last time I was out there, but after the plot work was done, I was raining sweat, thirsty, and being eating by deer flies. I gotta figure something out there. Is it too late for puffball season?

Yes giant chicken, basket full of chanterelles. We found them last week, 1 week after a nice rain. We had 2 more baskets that size full that we gave to some friends. I think its a little early actually for puffballs. Last year we found a down tree full of the small pear shaped puff balls, they were really good. I think your probably talking about the giant white ones. I don't really care for those much, I know a lot of people that do thou. I'm heading up to the land this weekend, where I found some last August. The trumpets are black or brown and almost paper thin. They are related to the chanterelles and grow a lot in the same areas. If you find large patches of moss on the ground check them for trumpets, almost all we find grow right out of the moss.

2 weeks ago I found a giant chicken that was close to pickin time.... I forgot all about it. Its at Dads place by Battle Lake..... probably shot now. it was very close to prime ripe when I found it.

You can actually trim a few inches off the outer edge of the mushroom and it will keep growing. Take what you need and let the rest grow.

Interesting... I have always grabbed the whole thing in one fell swoop.....
