Sudden deafness

All at once thursday I lost hearing in my left ear. I was letting the dogs out and suddenly felt pressure in my ear. Ended up going to urgent care and they put me on prednisone. The condition hasnt gotten any better so I went to my primary care today. He got me in with an ENT thursday morning. He thinks I have a syndrome he has seen before.

Has anyone here had it previously and did you regain any hearing in the affected ear?

Never heard of it but I wish you the best in dealing with it. My oldest can't hear out of his left ear. It's not a major issue but it does affect hunting and some other things.

Not a doc, but married to one ksgobbler, and that link speaks to a rather varied number of dramatically different causes. Recovery definitely could vary from cause to cause, so hopefully they'll quickly figure out what the actual cause was that led to the loss. Very thankful you're only experiencing it in one ear and not both!

I am a physician. Recovery depends on the cause. Seeing an ENT is absolutely the right thing to do so that correctable issues are addressed. Hoping for the best for you.

The reason could be many things so it’s best to get checked out. I lost my hearing and the ENT ordered an MRI just to rule out a brain tumor. Talk to your ENT , with the availability of imagining these days it’s a no brainer. Low probability but, you never know. It happened to me And I’m glad the ENT did the imaging As that’s what they found.

No idea ks,
But the ENT is a good idea. I hope this all goes well.

Dang
Will Pray you get your hearing back man

Had my appointment. First they did a hearing test. Confirmed 100% hearing loss in the left ear. Then I saw the ENT doc. He said basically my auditory nerve is choked off and this is actually quite common. He said they dont 100% know what causes it but the leading theory is a viral infection. He put me back on prednisone and jacked the dosage up and I will taper off. Come back in 2 weeks to check progress and if not making any they will inject steroids directly into the ear.

That’s good stuff but check the way your doctor prescribed you take it and make sure the drug store matches. I had to a round of that a few years back and the pharmacy messed it up. I was taking way to much and ran out. Called the doc and had to be seen then! Turns out they had to give me more to bring me down...72 hours with no sleep because it had me so wired.

Anyway I hope it is successful!

Still totally deaf from the left ear and weaning off the prednisone. Go back next week for direct injection it appears.

Hopefully that does the trick.

I'm really bummed that your treatments aren't making progress yet. I hope that the injections do the trick for you. Still wishing you the best with this!

How’s your balance been. The hearing nerve and the balance nerve are separate but one. Kind of like Romex wire. If one is affected the other might be also. I would certainly ask about an MRI when you go back. I would want to rule out anything more serious even if odds are low. At least hit him on on it, My two cents.

I did get some hearing back. They are doing injections to try and get me more. They put a tube in my ear to be able to get the injections in without numbing my ear drum every time.

That’s good news. Hopefully it keeps coming back.

Ive gained some back. Things like clapping, crowds, and am radio static make me cringe. He said that is a good sign as the brain is turning up the volume. Still cant understand people talking on that side. All injections are complete. Hearing test jan 3rd, and he wants to wait 3 to 6 months to talk about hearing aids.

“Good signs” is a nice thing to hear from a doc.

Progress is great! I hope that ear keeps showing signs of improvement.

Ive recovered enough that I can understand 30% of the words presented in at a loud volume to my ear. I go back in July to get another test and discuss hearing aids. He said he was hoping I would have gotten more back already, but he has had patients that improved up to the 6 month time frame.

Hopefully you get more back on your own. I spent a year fighting Blocked Eustachian Tubes. 2 ENT’s told me it would go away. It didn’t.
Finally found a doc in Philadelphia that diagnosed it and put tubes in my ears. Fixed it right then. It came back in one ear and she did that one again. Thank god it hasn’t returned.

Don’t know what your symptoms are but mine were basically like having a bucket on my head. I could hear things but everything was like I was listening from under water in a pool.
