This is something I have never seen before, looks a bit time consuming but its an interesting way to graft for sure.

as a side note - I guess you can get those perfect lateral branch angles this way... and you can put a branch where you want it!

That is cool!

I bet it gives the scion more support too.

Well kind looks like some real good bird perching limbs to me. Would have to keep that from happening.

I think the real benefit to that method is straight up that you can graft onto the trunk in an area where you have no lateral branching or no hope of ever naturally seeing a branch develop. Definitely something Im going to try/test this spring. Thought it was worth posting.

Agree, definitely worth posting. Always cool to learn new ways of doing things. I will definitely try this.

Aside from the benefit of putting a branch anywhere you want it, I’m not convinced this is better than doing a w/t graft 1-2’ out from the trunk on an existing branch. I have done about 100 grafts this way in the last few years. Getting away from the trunk seems helpful if the trees have taller or shading branches.

But this seems like a good alternative to scoring above a bud and waiting for a branch to grow there. Good stuff.
