Deer fly's

The past couple years the deer fly's are just terrible. Anyone have suggestions on what to use to kill them, or deter them? Traps? Fly tape?

I know they like low spots, with mud, so I am going to work on filling in any of them around my place. Anything else ?

A few years ago I bought some hazzelnut trees off of CL and the guy came up with these and he gave me a few and they work pretty well, also when wearing a hat I put a dryer sheet in the back where the hole above the strap is and this seems to help a little also.

Tanglefoot and a solo cup or tanglefoot and a hard hat. I don’t think there is a good way to massacre the bastards on a widespread basis.

God do I hate those things. I wear a ventilated USMC desert Camo boonie cover when I mow or go out to the field in the SxS.

One year they got so bad on our place that I put fly paper strips on the side mirrors of my truck. I drove our long tree lined driveway once or twice and the flys completely covered the fly paper. Put on new strips and repeat. Not sure it helped but few things are as satisfying.

Glad to see you out of the closet and posting! :emoji_grinning: I'm looking forward to learning a lot!

I found this video interesting:

I'm going to give some of these a try. I have a tool box on my ATV that I'll put them on.

Ha yes I am the ever present habitat troll.

They were so bad last weekend for the first time ever I had to wear a head net for deer flies. They would just come in swarms. Still not as bad as black flies but close.

I always seem to have spiderwebs on my trucks side mirror - I take some pleasure in seeing them get stuck as I drive through the property... so I get ya

Had the same experience last weekend in the Berkshires. We did not have a bad black fly season this year at all. A few days in May where they got thick...but they were largely absent. I was hoping for the same with deer flies, but no. They have been terrible this year. Usually if I am operating a chain saw or a splitter or mowing my lawn on my riding mower they kind of just leave you alone and are tolerable. Sweet Jesus, this year the bastards are numerous and fearless!

Vicks Vapo Rub..Works on deer flies and black flies, also mosquitos. Try it, it works. Just rub a little on various parts of exposed skin and they will leave you alone. You may need to re-apply it from time to time to retain its effectiveness.

My friend in northern WI used the hard hat covered in tanglefoot. He drove around on his ATV.dont remember exactly but it was something like 50-75 that were stuck to his hard hat.

I have see these traps that they use on horse farms. It has a black ball that swings back and forth. The flys are attracted to the movement.

The have been just horrible around my land... mowing is a constant effort in cutting grass and slapping deer flys simultaneously... I usually just tuck a long rag or t-shirt under my hat to protect my neck but it seems like they love the back of my hands deet or no deet.
