Ranetka crab is ripe. Wish I had others to compare it with but they have been pillaged and branches tore off along with my lone Chestnut crab. They left one apple for me on the Chestnut crab, it was good. Will see how long Ranetka hangs but this was the tree which dropped them a few weeks after Dolgo last year. The Dolgo is almost done, maybe a half doz apples still hanging

That’s the nicest looking chestnut crab I’ve ever seen. Mine have a rougher skin and more orangish/red.

I have chestnut crabs of both types and can not understand why. They taste the same.

For real? How can their be 2 types of the same Apple?

Things I am considering... rootstocks are different, soils are different, on gentle north and south slopes, sources are different.

I wonder if a sport could have been involved in the scion source from one nursery. I think sport is the correct term.

My mother in law planted these trees as tiny seedling over 40 years ago. Her mother in law started the seeds. No spray.

When do the Anaros drop for you? I have a few grafted up that will be transplanted in the spring.

That I have no clue. This tree is still in my nursery and I let it have one apple on it this spring after it flowered. I do know that it tasted terrible lol.

Kerr-didn’t plan on picking but there were only 3 on tree. Critters got half of one and when I went to pluck it off, another fell. So I picked the other one too. Very interesting taste, wasn’t sure if I was ripe but the seeds make it seem so? Bur, I though they had some red flesh to them?
