Swamp Hybrid Bur Oaks

Fellas.. thoughts on this tree? Pure SWO? Hybrid? It’s a big one at a park near me. Surrounded by burs and northern reds.

Those leaves in the second to last picture looks like there is some burr oak characteristics in that tree for sure. The round notches at the bottom of the leaves. Acorns look more like SWO. Probably confused about its true identity like half the country. Trans oak.

I said 2 years ago I was done planting oaks, then last spring I put in 25 more SWO. Gonna cage 5 native red oaks with weed mat and mulch yet before hunting. I have 100s of native red oaks growing with no assistance from me and I wanna see how a few do with premium care. I have 20 trees left to care for before hunting and then I'm done.


Keep saying that I am done planting oaks, but I wouldn't mind a few more of these Schuttes. I got 3 from Nativ nursury a few years ago and our winter kicked their ass bad. I need a more local seed source. They are alive but im not sure they will ever recover. I'd also like to try and plant a few pin oaks specifically for their fall color and some pure white oak for the next few generations.

Here is one of my native red oaks. Its right along a swtichgrass edge. My native oaks on this part of my land are FULLY loaded with a bigly crop of acorns. I'm gonna walk around and mark the really good producers with fluorescent paint so that I know for a few years that they were a heavy producer in 2023. Then I will change color in 2024. I'm starting to use paint a lot more on trees to help remember things.

I brought some Minnesota red oaks back to Idaho.

They are very robust growers indeed

This year, I have some oaks that are producing nuts for the first time. Swo, swamp chestnut, chinkapin and a chestnut oak. All of these are near each other and all are surrounded by producing English oaks. I just have to grow some of these acorns out to see what they look like. Hoping for an interesting hybrid.

Not sure where you are, but the schuette's from nativ that I have are doing great. Some have put on over 2' of growth on this year ( 3rd year in the ground).

Anyone have a seed source for a zone 3 white oak of really any kind. On my mothers place we have a lone white oak it’s a large tree maybe 24” dbh maybe larger been a few years since I’ve seen it. Growing up that tree never produced an acorn but I can’t recall any other white oak trees up there that I had ever seen. I’d like to find a northern seed source of white oak and plant a few more around that area. I will need to enlist one of my nephews for help most likely in this little endeavor who knows maybe he will catch the tree planting bug.

I would suggest you get a hybrid they will become sexual earlier…….6 years compared to 20 as I am led to believe.

I went to the sight. I am concerned about how little root the seedlings have. I believe that I am needin a a robust root system. It’s due to my lack of rainfall and reliance on flood irrigation.

Ya, you'd probably have to water to get them established.

Swamp whites can take some drought. I'd think a bur x swo combo would be one of the hardiest hybrids there is.

Burs are easy to find in zone 3, white and especially swamp white I rarely see!

Here are a few images.

The SWO in tubes were planted last fall. I sprouted them late winter under lights, then potted in a nursery until fall.

The bigger one in the cage is a Home Depot 3 year old.

The smaller one survived under water for two months. Its last falls. Over 15 other trees near it perished.

The STO scarlet oaks and other species seem to only survive where it’s not totally saturated.

Burs are easy to find in zone 3, white and especially swamp white I rarely see!

I have several white oaks I dug up in Minnesota………..they are doing well.
Hopeful they are burs.

I will get some images.

I don’t recall the acorns having big burrs on them.

some were dug up seedlings also.
