How many hours is too many

I know the answer is “it depends” based on maintenance and how hard it was used. But, I’m kicking around the idea of upgrading tractors and I see used ones that are all over the map. 500 hours to 5000 hours. I’m sick of tinkering with my current model and want something that can be more hands...

    Pruning grafts

Most of my apple grafts seem to be doing decently and I’m wondering if I should be pruning them or give them a full season of growing before hacking them? Many of them have the rootstock out growing the scion. Some of the scion have 2-3 buds that made it and are competing to be the leader.

    Shed hunt

This was by far the best shed season we have had. Granted we don’t really log many miles either. But this year I had a specific buck I was trying find the sheds from so we put in some extra time. No luck on the target buck but found some others. These are from two different properties.

    Archery Gobbler

It was a great spring in the turkey woods. My dad and I each connected which we have never done before in the same year. There were still birds around so we got a friend out and he arrowed a jake to boot. My bird came on my second sit. We dad had been watching a group of three toms that...

    Too late to prune?

I haven't been able to get to the shack and do my pruning for the year yet. The property is in central MN and it's been a strange and cold spring so the trees should be behind schedule. I'm not sure if the trees are budded out there or not. For reference, I live south about 150 miles south of...

    2017 Buck

Not much has been posted on here lately so here is my MN buck. I only could hunt the opening 2 days of the gun season. I saw this guy opening morning. He was the third wheel in a love affair between a doe and a really nice buck. I watched them all chase for about 45 minutes before the big buck...

    Rootstock - group purchase?

Is anyone out there interested in going in with me on buying some rootstock for grafting? If we get an order for 100 or more, you can get the price down to $1.26 per tree. Shipping to different locations won't work so you would have to be local to the Minneapolis metro region. I'm happy to...

    Good start to 2017

My 2017 season officially kicked off last weekend. Sunday evening this guy came in and offered a shot. I didn't realize it until I got my hands on him that he had a split brow and a small sticker so that was a great bonus. Looking through photos, we found pictures of him from last year with the...

    Beaver Problems

I now have 2 beaver damns on my property and they are causing all kinds of issues. Felling trees, the high water is backing up into fields. It's getting to be a major headache. Do you have any suggestions for an absentee landowner? I'm not on site to control their number via hunting and I don't...

    Ground-nesting bees

I have a 3 year old apple tree that was looking pretty tough coming out of winter. It wilted and died early this summer. I was mulching other trees this weekend and noticed there are ground nesting bees at the base of the dead tree. (Yes, I noticed because I got stung) My question, could there...

    Ugly Bird

I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get out this spring as baby number two was set to come any day. I called my wife on the way home from work on Friday to see if she could hold it in for another day. She gave me clearance for the following morning but that was it so I picked up a tag. The...

    The horror!

I had 53 grafts (1and 2 year old) over wintering in the garden. I checked them yesterday and every single one has been girdled up about 12". I thought the fence was rabbit proof but evidence would prove otherwise. Within the last 2 weeks they have found a way in and feasted. I had about 20...

    Leaves curling

I've got 2 grafts that are not looking good. They had good initial growth but now the top most leaves are curling and turning a bit yellow. Looks like the one has a bit of CAR but I don't think that is causing the curling. Anyone have any thoughts? Too much water, too little. We had some...

    Grafted, now what?

I'm only in my second year of grafting so there is still a lot to learn. I've got 39 apples grafted this year and all are showing signs of life (although Dolgo, Northern Spy and Black Oxford are WAY behind the others). I'm still hardening them off before getting them into the nursery. I hope to...

    Turkey time

My dad and I went out Saturday morning for the first hunt of the year. He insisted I take the first shot this year since he did last. We ended up walking out with a nice Tom. We hunted over a clover food plot that we put in 3 years ago. It hasn't greened up much yet but it still draws the birds...

    A couple options

I've gotten these two on camera a lot this year but they are nocturnal to date. crossing my fingers that something changes or the rut lures them out with some shooting light left. They seem to be loving my clover plot so I'm pretty happy with that.

    Graft rubber bands

how long after grafting should I remove the rubber bands from my grafts. I used parafilm and then bands over to keep the joint tight until healed. I grafted pretty late, 2.5 weeks ago. Most have buds starting to break and I'm in the process of getting them out of the basement and planted outside.
