I just joined yesterday. So bare with me been a minute since I've been on a forum for awhile, most of the good ones are long gone I don't know if that ages me more or not.
My name is Ethan Erdmann, I've been involved in outdoors for as long as I can remember, not really much of a hunter, I try, I just wasn't raised up in that way, parents didn't even have guns. I'm originally from central WI, Wisconsin Rapids, and now live in Lake of the Woods, MN. I was a Boy Scout and involved in 4-H growing up, got to Eagle Scout at 15 and basically just did adventures like going to and working Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, have worked for the USFS, MN DNR, and a couple private tree companies in WI and MN. I like to travel and last place was Utah, I do have a South Africa hunt I'm planning for this next spring, that I got from Ducks Unlimited. That should be both exciting, scary, and fun! I'm always looking to learn more everyday, whether it be AI integrations and systems, managing for wildlife, rebuilding engines, how to build my own house, and grow my own food. I'm pretty open book and honest with folks especially when it comes to management. There is a lot of information out there, and sometimes too much for many.
I don't own any land at this time, mostly just rent and live below my means, Property is too overvalued up here in my mind for swampland, and of course the Lake of the Woods tax on everything. Because Walleye...sigh...I look back at northern WI and I can find way better properties but not quite ready to move until I get my business up and running smoothly. So I'm taking the plunge headfirst and hopefully down the road would love to own some timberlands and ag for the business and some for persona. My dream properties are quite crazy with what I know and how I'd do it, but the goal is to manage it sustainably while creating a positive income stream every year off the land. So if there are any opportunities I'd love to network in that realm too.
I am a forester by profession and a carpenter (started learning framing and general construction this past year). I worked for the MN DNR Div. of Forestry for 8 years. I started my own forestry consulting company here in Northern MN out of Lake of the Woods, I service majority of the northern counties north of Hwy 2, but could go more south for folks if enough work comes that way. I offer the following services and have these certifications:
-Candidate Certified Forester (Society of American Foresters)
-Member of Minnesota Forestry Association (MFA)
-Ducks Unlimited Member
-National Deer Association Member
-International Society of Arboriculture Member
-MN Pesticide Applicator (Forestry and ROWs)
-Working on getting my NRCS TSP for CAP and EQUIP (there are no providers in the NW MN)
-Certified MN Woodland Stewardship Plan Writer (Most Counties north of Hwy 2, as well as Polk, Pennington, Marshall, Beltrami, Cass, Carlton, Pine)
-Timber Services (I charge no commission for harvests less than 40 acres, try to help the smaller guys out more
-GIS Mapping / Analysis
-General Forestry Consulting
-Tree Planting or Project Mgmtt

I wanted to join this forum mostly, to be honest, get my name out there about my forestry business in MN, I saw a lot of posts of landowners in the areas I'm in looking for advice for management. I figured I'd join and tell people about my services and network with folks. Most of the private guys in Northern MN are retiring and there is a vacuum in staffing for NRCS, MN DNR, and SWCD, so I'm going to try my best to service as many folks as I can. I have about 6-8 folks already in the Kittson, Marshall, Polk, and Beltrami counties in the pipeline for Woodland Stewardship Plans just from reaching out to local SWCD, DNR and NRCS offices. Some counties didn't even know people are interested in the management plans or getting cost-share. So they are super happy someone young is stepping up to take over the workload from the old guard.
So if you do need a plan written, a timber harvest marked out, or general consulting contact me and we'll see if a partnership would be beneficial in managing your land. And if you are in my area, I do a free consultation walk with you prior to a plan being written and/or timber service, you can call the "Call Before You Cut" program offered through MFA as well. I'm here to listen and give you guys some ideas, though my focus is in Forestry, I can find the answers or know someone who does if its more Ag, Wildlife, or Ecology related, not afraid to say I don't know as a business owner.

And if you have a neighbor who is also interested in having consulting/plan writing/timber services bring them along to the walk, and I'll offer a discount for both of you!
