Thanks. The only white pines that made it was the ones surrounded by thick briers. That was the key for me. That helped stop both the browsing and rubbing, but I still had a heck of a time even at that. There were some in the back that I finally caged.

Now that I've increased the deer numbers here they even browse Norway Spruce. A good number of the seedlings I planted last year were eaten.

I'm seeing oak pollen for the first time this year - so likely a first crop on some of them.

I planted some elderberry shrubs and they were browsed so hard they could never grow. I caged some of them and one grew 9 feet high the first year it was caged. It had developed a good root system and that was why it could shoot up so quickly once protected. Now I'm seeing elderberry come up from seed, and many of them make it just fine.

The first Chinese Chestnuts I planted didn't seem to interest them for browsing. But some did get rubbed when they started getting bigger.

Now, I can't plant small Chinese Chestnut without a cage. They will live but are browsed so badly they look like a bush instead of a tree.

One thing I never saw touched was a Red Osier Dogwood. Every one I planted made it just fine, and those things are thick now.

Next spring I want to get some more Norway Spruce, and I want some big nice ones like I've seen some of you guys post on here. The ones I got were just too small.

For some of you guys who got the nice ones, please let me know some good places with the best prices to get some.

Thanks guys. I do a lot of munching on stuff myself when I walk the east edge to check a couple of cameras. This year looks like its going to be a crazy good fruit year. I've never seen as many pears in my life. Later on when they start getting some size I will update with some pics.

That is an Arrowwood Viburnum. That one is deer candy when young and tender. I tried getting them going without cages and they just mauled them. Once I protected them for about 5 years I was able to take the cages off. Now they just browse the tips, and it doesn't hurt the shrub.
