When to fall transplant?

Got red dogwood and apple trees going from zone 5 ny to zone 3 adirondacks. Had 2 or 3 frosts. Leaves got fall color, but are all on young trees. Mature trees all leafed out by me.

Dug up my M111's, gave my coworker 5 or 6.

roots did not come up easy. Had my trees too close to my red dogwood patch. Coult dig on that side well.

Lesson learned, make hard decisions with hard clay. Roots do not come out easy. Might rethink the (3) 7-8ft tall 30-06's on B118 I was going to dig up. I ammended that soil better than the nursery, so might get lucky there.

Window might be closing up a touch. Ice starting to form on my pool. Ground can't be too far behind.
