What to plant for November attraction in central Nebraska

I hunted the Nebraska gun season for the first time this year. The farmer said he’d plant us a food plot next year and wants to know what to plant.

It’s in central Nebraska so it’s hilly and sandy. My first thought was starting with an oats and cereal rye mix. I’m worried it’s too dry to plant clover with it and I’ve heard chicory can somewhat be a weed and spread.

So my first question is what to plant and my second question is if oats and rye is a good mix is there something like clover that I should throw in there too?

I don’t have experience dealing with sandy areas.

Thanks!

Not sure on sand or Nebraska. Rye should grow. Worth a test anyway. Turnips with good fertilizer? Again worth a test but you're out of my knowledge base.

Rye/Oats grow pretty easy. Have him throw in about 10#/acre radish, it's a cheap experiment if it fails. Turnips would be the same way, sometimes it takes deer a few years to figure out turnips, for some reason.

Sounds good! I’ve planted all of those here in Wisconsin so that’s what I’ll have them plant. Thanks!
