What chicory varieties work best?

Not to change the topic but where is the source for Barduro? Also, will this stuff grow in the north?

This is the link Cutman shared. I have not checked with these folks so I am not 100%. I am also not sure how far north it will grow. I am in the southern half of Indiana and it has done well for me thus far. I am very hopeful for this spring to see how it does in it's second full year.

I had two bags left at home of seed but my Real World blend was repackaged into a bag as my other had a whole ripped into it so no label...however I sent an email off to Don asking. My other bag was from local feed shack had gotten wet and the label had smeared beyond legible means.

I've had great success with deer hammering both seed types (potential same kind but we shall see). I am planting about a .5 acre of solid chicory this year as an experiment personally.

I've had good results with forage feast chicory and six point chicory. The WINA chicory in chic magnet from wildlife institute has been the least attractive so far for me. I really want to try the choice chicory from Pennington but it is really pricey.

Way too little chicory for what J-bird is thinking of doing...but it does confirm if O'brion doesn't list the type of chicory either seems may be tough to know exact kinds in any mixes used.

The point is to plant less competitive alfalfa with chicory rather than annual clovers. Once established both the alfalfa and chicory are somewhat drought tolerant. One could add some "Six Point" chicory to the 3x mix. As the alfalfa dies back with frost, the chicory is the dominate forage with a little ladino to fill in gaps.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried alfalfa before and I simply lack the deer numbers to keep it lush, so it requires more maint on my part. Looks like a great mix in the right application though. I have not looked at the brand you listed, but I will and see what else they have that may be of interest.

I am not sure how willing Don will be to share what variety he uses. I know he guards his variety of switchgrass pretty well!

You sort of hit on something I have tried to do more of....and that is recording the seed labels of mixes and BOB seed mixes I use. That way if I find something that seems to really work well I have a far better chance of figuring out what it is. What kills me is how these companies have to have a label on their product listing it's contents, yet many do NOT list these labels on their web sites. These labels, when they list the variety, can be of particular interest and is how I stumbled across the Barduro red clover I love so much.

Yeah, it is possible it is undisclosed, which I can respect as legally he would not need to let it be known. I will be honest, being part of their pro-staff I am bias towards them, but even I buy some chicory locally as well and some specific clovers as well.

I would take and post a pic of the bag and then list the contents off the label of seed I bought here and there. I sort of hoped others would follow suit, but not so much. I thought it would be a good resource for folks to go see what was actually in some of these products and the varieties and be able to comment if something really did well or didn't work with a toot. You start a thread or the like here I will copy over my stuff from the other one to at least contribute some content.

I know I have a folder started of the likes on an old laptop. I'll find that hopefully and start collecting images from all the various seed companies I can get my hands on off shelves or seed stores locally...that way when I start it I'll have more than a few. Like it!

Like I said - I think it would be of value, but not sure who all else will think so, since we sort of preach against BOB, but it certainly has it's uses. You kick-start it and I'll add what I have and keep an eye out at my local retailers as well.

The Six-Point, Oasis and Forage Feast have all done well for us - though my location is a distance from you mid-westers. Now we get ours from Welter's. Used to get BOB.

Also have noticed the fall usage is higher than mid-summer.

Keep in mind that it would need to be dynamic. SuperMegaBuckTrophyAttractingSecretMix may have different seed in it from time to time as seed prices vary. It took me a while to figure this out. Perhaps all companies don't do it but many do. That is why I always tell guys to look at the seed tag and ignore the brand or mix name. They are meaningless.

If you guys do start this thread, be sure to capture the date as well as the seed varieties listed.

I have used the oasis from welter and it seems to do great and deer love it starting in late summer until late fall. It seems to compete well with clovers. Durana did well in WNC for a year or so and then we had warm wet summer (wet and rainy for several weeks) and mold seemed to take over the whole thing and it was gone. Durana is great in drought conditions but not in continuously wet times. "D"
