VTR barrel threading

What could possibly go wrong? Let's find out.IMG_20250204_093114995_AE.jpg

So far not impressed. This by far has the most in-concentric bore i have ever seen. With a true muzzle the breech runs .160" out.

Turned .04997 and held true to bore. No issues.

Wanna thread my BLR when your done?

I like the lathe jaws.

I can't wait to see him timing the threads for the triangle shaped suppressor.

VTR was such a good idea it should be brought back in seven years after people forget how good it was. Maybe next time it can be a trapezoid or rhomboid.

Yes, But I think it's a pain to get out of the reciever. Not sure how critical the timing is on the barrel lugs. It's a rack n pinion action bolt gun, not so much a lever gun.

Gotta see how the reduced recoil loads do. Might just get the root cause of the problem fixed, neck surgery. Much less consequences messing up threads on a lathe than on a operating table. Lotta data goes below C7.

What happened? Did you make a mistake engaging the half nuts at the wrong time? I have a friend who's a gunsmith and last time I talked to him he told me he threads barrels going from the shoulder to the end of the barrel. That way he's not worried about smashing into the shoulder if he doesn't get the half nuts disengaged at the right time.

Spider came loose. It was just a final clean up pass too.

Bummer! Seems like it goes that way sometimes. Going to turn out well though.

What was Remington's schtick for making triangle barrels in the first place? stiff for the weight?

Yup, tastes great, less filling.
One gunsmith told me that some of the vtr bolt gun barrels have been pretty good shooters. He has been picking some up as take-offs. I think they might be produced by Douglas. Not sure if it offers any advantage over simple fluting, maybe slightly lighter. The one thing I noticed was just how far the bore was off axis. It is far enough you can see and feel it, somewhere in the neighborhood of .010".

Yeah, that's gross. I dont know diddly about machining but it seems like a lot of effort for questionable results (on remington's part)?
