Trees orders?

The past 2 years I have used rootmaker pots for the majority of my tree orders. Sometimes they fit in a 5 gallon ok, sometimes a root or 2 needs to be trimmed.

Keep em home water all summer long. August and even right before christmas, plant the tree when you get the chance. Tree gets the fall and spring to get some roots before next summer heat comes around.

I found out newspaper has fungicide on the ink, which can help the roots from getting transplant shock from mold. Works good for scions too.

I have potted them temporarily too, like for a week or two before planting. Just keep them cool and dark. I've put them in the basement, wrapped them in a tarp and place ice packs wrapped in a towle ontop of the soil to keep them cool. Be a bit careful not to have the soil water logged.

I got 5 crabapple trees I ordered yesterday and got 4 pear trees today. Still waiting on 100 seedling oaks.

For all you tree addicts out there, I have a "feeling" unsold pear trees will be on sale somewhere in a few weeks.

Any update on this?

What kind of soil or medium are you using in the rootmaker pots?

I use a bark base potting mix for tree seedlings. Avoid Miracle Grow potting mixes if possible.

What is it about miracle grow potting soil which makes it a poor choice?

Most growers consider it a lower quality product. Promix, Sungro and Lambert are commercial brands.

Same.

I get "mushroom compost" that is basically aged bark and wood chips. A layer of that in the bottom of the pot, and the rest is a mix of peat moss, that same mushrooms compost, fine compost, and about 10% soil from under my compost bin. Everything should smell like the forest floor. If I get a bag of smelly cow manure compost, I don't use it for potting.

My mix drains really well, so I have to keep the pot watered, but the results are fantastic. It's a really loose mix that allows for some extreme root growth.

I really want to try a sand bed, but I'm never in one place long enough to keep it watered.

Edited for clarity

It's basically peat moss and fertilizer with a huge mark-up. You can make your own for a fraction of the price, and get better results.

I'll use miracle grow on established plants if I get it for free, but I won't ever buy it, and I won't use it in pots.

Consider products like this for best results. High porosity mixes are a good second choice.

I'll be there tomorrow for planting this weekend. Can you turn up the heat in Lycoming county?

Down here in SE PA it's getting pretty green. Two Blue Hill apples I planted last spring are already leafing out. Some forsythia way back there is blooming.

I really blame the month of March. It's been so erratic the last 5ish years. Summer like warmth mixed with freeze and the occasional snow.

I live even further up in NEPA - I had to brush snow off my truck more than once this week!
