The past 2 years I have used rootmaker pots for the majority of my tree orders. Sometimes they fit in a 5 gallon ok, sometimes a root or 2 needs to be trimmed.
Keep em home water all summer long. August and even right before christmas, plant the tree when you get the chance. Tree gets the fall and spring to get some roots before next summer heat comes around.
I found out newspaper has fungicide on the ink, which can help the roots from getting transplant shock from mold. Works good for scions too.
I have potted them temporarily too, like for a week or two before planting. Just keep them cool and dark. I've put them in the basement, wrapped them in a tarp and place ice packs wrapped in a towle ontop of the soil to keep them cool. Be a bit careful not to have the soil water logged.
