Topping Question

So my two crabapples showed up from Wallace Woodstock, and they are whips with no branches. I read that you want to top these in order to promote growth, is that correct? Also does this in any way limit tree height or branch development. My thinking is that I want them to grow as tall as possible to stay out of deer reach eventually.

Ok thanks I think I will just let them grow then, roots looked good to me. Got a whitney and doglo from them, going in the ground this afternoon. I couldn't resist and bought a chestnut from a local greenhouse too that is already planted. The chestnut is about 7-8' tall so it will be interesting to see the difference in development this year.

My chesnut crab from Wallace I planted last year put on a tad more than 36 inches of growth last year, crazy good trees.

I have a chestnut crab that I grafted last year and it has about 36 inches of growth.

Chestnut crab is my favorite apple at this point, especially towards the end of the ripening period.
