Too late for a 2nd Take?

Too late to graft onto a tree? Zone 5/6 NY. One or two trees planted outside last year didnt take their scions. Trim back and put another one on? Crabapples have their first set of leaves fully out. Most apples Are about 1/2" and still curled into themselves.

At your location I would say not too late. I would cut just an inch or two below the failed cut from last year.

Give it a shot !

I’d try it if it was me

I’m at zone 5/6 Michigan and topworked a tree yesterday. We will see

I just topworked a few trees this week, NW WI but I’d say timing was perfect here. Leaves starting to pop and bark slipping nicely.

Absolutely not. This is when I do all my topworking in western NY and northern PA. I just did several in the last week and have one more to do I just found that beavers lopped off. 😡 9 year old Golden Hornet that a beaver some how got his teeth through the cage. Was only worried about bucks rubbing it and had a smaller diameter cage.

Years ago I planted some weeping Willows along a stream in my back yard thinking someday those are going to look great. Trouble was the beavers thought they tasted great!

I'm field grafting a dozen or so this weekend. Trees are just starting to break bud and leaf out

Yep now is a good time Barndog in WI. Did some topwork over the weekend and bark slipped very easily. And no bug clouds yet either. Now ticks....well tis the season

I am thinking with the mature tree cages putting some pressure trated wood along the inside, like 3 or 4. To get a bit of gap between the cage and tree. Also, taking a router or sander a roundign the edges. So a side or top edge doesn't dig into it. Would probably of detered the beavers.

Got lucky, whacked one or two at cam pin the fall. Pick axed their dam in a spot or two. Saw some stick come back in november on the cleared spot. Just was washot. Small cleaing worked great. high water events it floos the general area killing off mature trees, then goes low after the storm. We use the swamp for a shooting range. So I can enter it without waders again.

Missed my oportunity to topwork this weekend, forgot the scions. No harm in mature dolgo or antonovka around late season crabs though.

Turnign point or ADK crab didn't take to M111. They liked siberian crab though. Wondering if those are 2 varieties that don't like certain roostocks.
