TinyCrab rootstock?

Yarg

5 year old buck +
I found a field of hundreds of crab apple trees of all sizes, but the fruit is berry size.. would these be fine to graph to . I ask because there's many whips pencil thick, 3 footers and they grow and really wet spots so I think they tolerate the wet well.

I would think so... Its worth a go, especially if you have free scion to work with and you know that the whips are all crabs. You really never know what your going to get with seedlings there can be a lot of variation. One would assume they are hardy my guess is only time will tell.

Wow great news I'm excited to try it out as I have a lot of wet spots on the farm and I could see if these will tolerate.... Now to get scions! Thanks

Are you sure they are crabs? If they are, go ahead and graft. Then cage.

I wanted some variety so in addition to clonal rootstock, I grew a bunch of crabs and domestic apples from seed. I planted them in the field and let them grow a year. I then top worked them leaving a nurse branch. They will produce full size trees. The nurse branch will let me know if I happen to get lucky with seedling fruit characteristics.

Thanks,

Jack
