Throw and grow?

I'd throw pretty much all of that.. The first year on my land when I just got one spraying of long standing hayfield and did a throw and roll, i had quite a bit of pea growth actually and that was over an impressive sod mat. So i'd say probably worse conditions on the ground but with rolling.. If you get a solid rain you might have a good number of peas sprout.
I passed on spreading the peas but spread everything else, we have not had the rain. I'm skeptical on what may grow in this application with minimal moisture. Been a lot of turkeys in there the past week cleaning up seed, I'm afraid.

It will get 50#/acre rye in another 10 days or so.

Got it done. Probably too much thatch to be honest. They were at least belly button high most places. They will dry down a lot, but I’m not sure…

Took a gander yesterday with dad. I forgot to take a pic, but there is oats and brassicas growing all over the spot I mowed. That thatch dried down a ton and is really about the perfect amount. I got lucky.

I'm fairly new to throw &mow. I had some success getting clover started this way in an old pasture this spring, but I have no experience doing fall plots this way.

I tried a test strip by broadcasting rye, clover, chicory, and some leafy brassicas into thigh tall weeds/grass, then mowing with a walk-behind brush-hog. We have since gotten two decent rains of about half an inch.

How long before I should see germination? I'm assuming it will take longer than a tilled plot.

7-10 days if you got enough moisture.

Rye is the easy one to spot. Reddish/purple stems on the young stuff.

Growth in my throw and mow was decent. You can kind of tell strips where I mowed leaving heavier thatch. Not bad though.

I threw and mowed a couple acres last weekend. Hadn’t rained in 2 weeks. No rain in the 10 day. Hopefully some deer piss on the plots. I knew better but was antsy

Dog I'm curious why you threw and mowed instead of threw and rolled or crimped. It appears to me that by mowing the duff is mulched up and does not have the same effect. I see the mass carpet that SD achieves.

It’s a good question. I only have a small 5’ packer and it’s not very heavy. We are bone dry and hard. I wasn’t confident that the packer would have much effect. My hope was by mowing the residual would protect the seed and possibly give it some moisture retention. At the end of the day I anticipate doing this again when we finally get some rain but I wanted to give it hell just in case we had a couple rains spin up

Read this today
"If you look at January through May of this year, we were the wettest year on record out of 131 years," he said. "If you look at August, last month was the driest August in those 131 years. So he's absolutely right. This has been a crazy year of Kentucky weather."

Dog is there anyway you can add weight to the cultipacker? It would be interesting to see if you get a better result.
