Geez, all things considered, he looks pretty healthy. Imagine he's still at risk of infection getting him. Hope he makes it.

He looks pretty good for that big of hole and still open. Like Mort said, infection is his biggest danger. If he has good nutrition he can get to easily it sure would help his chances.

I feel your pain. I've got three walking wounded, two haven't been seen via camera in a couple weeks so I don't think they made it. The other was still alive after the thermometer fell out the other day. I'm surprised he is still around. I didn't think he'd make it. I've had several deer that have been wounded in the fall/winter and it's been a 50/50 rate of survival so far.

I'd say his odds of survival are inversely proportional to the wolf/coyote population in the area.

Could be tough... the fact that hes shed is a sign hes more stressed. They survive some pretty crazy things though!

Deer are so dang tough! This guy looks pretty fat and healthy other than the wound. I bet he makes it, but his rack will suffer for a couple years.

Ouch!
I’m sorry but I don’t see that guy making it.
Maybe if he heals before the flys start laying eggs and he doesn’t get an infection.

I have a three legged deer that has a wound in almost the same place. On this doe, the wound is completely healed and a white patch is the only visible evidence of an old injury. She is all on her own as the doe groups do not want to have anything to do with her. She has a severe limp but so far this winter has managed to make it to my bird feeding areas and find what ever left overs are on the ground. As long as the snow depth does not keep her from moving about I believe she will make it through the winter.
As for the buck in the picture I give him less than a 20% chance of surviving. Mostly because the wound is still open this late in the season. I truly hope I am wrong.

I wonder if by the OP being farther north it will give him enough time to heal before the insects come out?

The projectile probably didn't penetrate the shoulder blade. I'd think it would be dead already if it did. Just a flesh wound...

I have a good amount of coyotes. I have kept my camaras going and have not got any new pics of him yet! Hopefully he is hanging low.. I will post if he shows up..

I hope he makes it! They sure are tough animals.
