Speedometer issues

Alright since the MOBuck furnas issue got fixed quite rapidly, :)I will throw another handy man (although auto tech) issue out for help. My Chevy Silverao 2005 has had intermittent speedometer issues for awhile. At times it says I am going way faster than I really am, even when I am a standstill! Now my tachometer is doing the same thing, not good since I was using it to judge how fast I was driving!:D After a little web surfing it seems that it is a fairly common problem with that years production. Question really is that appears dealers charge $600-700 to fix the issue; whereas their is a guy called Dr. Speedometer that has a website that claims to rebuild the entire panel for $169. Looks legit and has reccomendations in various places for him. Anybody ever have the same issue? Know anybody who has used that guy to rebuild the instrument panel?

Sorry I can't help as I don't really pay attention the the spedo. I just slow down if the fuzz buster starts beeping.

A good friend of mine had speedo or tach issues of some sort. Sent it down to some guy in Arizona I think and fixed everything for less than $200 plus updated the dash lights to LED.

Everything works perfectly now. He had a Suburban about that 2005 vintage as well....

Junkyard cluster. Your odometer reading will change though.

I haven't used his service but a friend of mine ordered the stepper switches and did the rebuild himself. Very easy if you have skills (I don't...lol). I wouldn't hesitate if that guy was near me... Have them do it.

I went through D&D Instruments out of Mpls to fix the same issue on my previous truck. Send in the cluster, they repair, & ship back.

You are correct in that the 2005 have had dash cluster related issues. I did some digging when my wifes fuel gauge lost it's mind (05 Trailblazer). We have not had the tach and speedometer issues that you speak of. We simply use the trip odometer to track milage between fill ups. $169 seems awful cheap - but I am sure the dealership price is mostly labor getting everything out and unconnected and then re-installed. If you feel comfortable taking it out and putting it back in then you can have this guy repair it or go to a salvage yard and get one. You could also take just the cluster to the dealership and have them fix it as well - might want to see if they will do that and what it would cost. I am not sure if you will lose your current odometer setting or not - those are digital and it wouldn't surprise me if that info is stored in the computer. The dealership should be able to answer that question as well. Since I know these are known to have issues I would look into having everything checked out. My luck would be they would fix the speedo and tach and then a few weeks later my gas gauge would act up!

My gas gauge has never been all that reliable for a long time. Ran out of gas twice when it went from a 1/4 tank to zero in the blink of an eye! Never let the gauge read below 1/2 tank now when not on long trips where I am keeping track of miles. Thanks for the input guys. Looks pretty simple to remove the gauge cluster. If anybody else has further leads on guys that fix these pipe up.
