Severe cold weather is coming

We live north of Devlin, which is half way between Fort Frances and Emo. I worked for 31 years at the paper mill in the Fort until it closed down. Now out of Emo for Emcon Services road maintenance. Weather lik this I tell everyone I miss the mosquitoes. Lol

Been by Devlin so many times, we have been going to the same fish camp for about 30 years now on crow/kakagi lake. I can picture the curve of the highway as it passes by/through Devlin and the older white "Universal" building out by the highway - I think its been for sale close to 30 years... and Emo - I know that town a bit better -- I've been to Tompkins Hardware a few times for boat issues and to the bigger new grocery store there. Love the spring, summer and fall fishing- not fond of the mosquitoes but they are usually only bad in camp or on shore.... we are on the water most of the time we are there apart from sleeping at night.

This something you dont see down south I bet: When it gets this cold you can flash freeze the fish up here... we have tossed perch on the ice... they have frozen solid enough to snap them in half. Gather them up in a 5 gal bucket at the end of the day,,,, still frozen solid - get home and dump warm water in the bucket to thaw them for cleaning... come back later to find them swimming around.

Coldest weather here since 1996. Feel sorry for my 2 labs I have in the kennel next to my shed. dumped four 55 gallon bags of shredded paper and a whole bale of straw in the dog house with 2 heated water dishes that hold about 3 gallons each. They have a pretty good nest in there but I still might have to get them inside. Nasty cold but next weekend in maybe going to hit 30---that will feel almost hot.

I made sure my dog has dry straw and banked the igloo style house with snow.

When we had an outdoor dog we would give him a can of the smelly dog food on cold nights like that. The extra calories seem to help them out when it is cold.

We had some wicked temps in the winter of 2014-2015. The coldest in the state was -32 and just north of me a little ways, one of the Mesonet stations was either -28 or -30 (can't remember for sure). These are actual temps and not wind chill. Back in 1994, it was almost the same.

Here are the statistics for my general area:
  • We have a 99% chance of hitting +13 or below
  • We have a 50% chance of hitting +1 or below
  • We have a 20% chance of hitting -8 or below
  • We have a 10% chance of hitting -12 or below
  • We have a 3% chance of hitting -18 or below

Right now the Weather Channel is showing the coldest we will get in the next 4 days is +6, so we are coming out good in this one.

School was canceled today because of last night's snow and wind. Now it just canceled for Tues, Wed, and Thur due to cold. I've never known schools to cancel that many days in advance. I can see Wed/Thur but tonight isn't quite so bad... maybe toughen up a little?

They cancelled my kids for tomorrow already, not looking forward to the morning. Commute to work.

They canceled our schools today because of snow as well, and Tuesday and Wednesday because of the cold. Our low actual temp on Wednesday is -30. I don't care how far north you are that's fricken cold. I don't remember them canceling for cold this early in the past, but they probably have.

I don't envy the schools having to make those calls. One mistake and the whole world hates you. It's easy to ask why afterwards. I'm glad they won't have buses running when it's that cold. At -20 it's only minutes between warm and comfy and dead.

Good news is our deer are looking great going into this. I just wish I had a magic pillow to put out for them to make it easier on them. Can you imagine being out in those temps all day? They are tougher than I am, that's for sure.

Our dogs are house dogs, even the long haired one doesn't like it this cold!

Cleaned up 6-8" of snow twice today, wind blew all day and it's drifted really well, had a couple 3' drifts I had to bust open going to the pole barn tonight. Cold weather to move in now.

I'm working on the conifers, and I ran out of corn.

I couldn't agree more. All in due time I guess. I wish trees grew faster.

-36 real temp for a low tonight, : (

Guessing I might lose a couple apple trees I was pushing zone wise.

Anyone have liberty an enterpise on b118 make it through these temps before?

Decent amount of snow cover.

Last winter, both went through a brief period of -34 around daybreak. Enterprise had it’s first apple this summer and Liberty had a good crop that I thinned. Both on B118.

John, post #72 - Clusters of 5' spruce will make a big difference for deer to hide from the wind. They don't need to be 15 footers. Clusters like that with some switch or MG around them would seem like a hotel to deer - wind blocking compounded by a variety of textures.

It’s happening again. Gonna have lows below zero coming over the next couple days. Snow is falling again. Looks like 6-8” expected this time. Nowhere near what some of you are seeing. But nonetheless I’m not looking forward to working nights,on a bridge, 400 feet over the water with wind chills near 40 below.

^ thz art, feel a little better

Although I now feel I'm pushing my luck after ordering some Chinese chestnut an American chestnut from cold stream for spring. Guess they can only go to -20, only putting in 5 of each so I'm not out much if it flops.

And I know the risks of the AC
Just hope that I may live isloated far enough west to avoid blight.

Wildfire had some chestnuts about 50 miles south of here in a strong zone 4. Some were six foot tall.

One buddy tried some up here and I don’t think they survived.
