Scoring/cutting to make branches

Looking for some advice on how to do this and when during the year to best do it. I watched a video where the lady cut 2 horizontal slices just above a bud taking out a sliver of wood. Is this how it’s done? I’ve never tried it and was wondering if it works and I should consider this on some of my trees.

It works! I no longer have to rely on mother nature to randomly throw off a branch where I want one to balance the load.

Maya gave me the pointers to notch above a bud to get a branch growing. Like A.J. says ^^^^^ it works.

Here's a really good video by Skillcut on creating branches by cutting/scoring and also just creating the structure you want in a young tree; cutting/scoring starts at about 11 minutes into the video.

I think my favorite thing in the world is finding out that “the way everyone does things” is wrong.

I started cleft grafting in March a few years ago. Everyone says you have to wait until the threat of freezing has passed but I’ve proven that that advice is nonsense. Many nights with low temps of 20 after I have topworked apples and pears in the last few years and I have lost zero grafts.
